History behind the House
  • The Mission House is in its 3rd year to date, it
    was set up in 2005
  • Originally there were 2 Diaconaal Jaar flats but
    it was decided that more was to be offered more
    opportunities and challenges for volunteers, so
    a Christian youth house was created
  • The Mission House was born out of the
  • Diaconaal Jaar idea, international
  • community, freedom to see different
  • walks of life give young people an
  • opportunity to experience life

What is The Mission House ?
  • An international community of 8 people from all
    4 corners of the world, mainly drawn from Europe
  • Each member of the team works as a full-time
    volunteer in different projects around the city
  • The team work lives together to build up a
    community
  • There are weekly group meetings for
  • reflection faith

Diaconaal Jaar
  • The Mission House is part of the Diaconaal Jaar
    which is an annual volunteering programme
  • An International program from home abroad for
    young people bringing them together giving them
    an opportunity to work in challenging situations
    ranging from terminally ill, the homeless to
    children under the morals of a Christian
    background
  • Through the Diaconaal Jaar around 50 people from
    all over Europe can come work in the
    Netherlands
  • There are 3 seminars through out the year to
    evaluate
  • encourage personal spiritual growth Dutch
  • language courses

The Work
  • The Mission House team works within a number of
    social projects
  • Each team member works up to 36 hours a week
  • The 36 hours are made up of working in 4 to 5
    different projects a project for the Mission
    House team to work on together

Drugspastoraat - www.diaconie.org
  • Offers addicts spiritual guidance, advice
    support
  • A service is held every Sunday afternoon for
    homeless people and drug addicts
  • As part of the project there are visits to people
    in their individual situations
  • Help is given to them get out of
  • situations e.g. To help someone
  • come off drugs or to help find
  • someone a place to live

Meisjesstad - www.zustersaugustinessen.nl
  • This is a shelter for women only
  • Started by Augustine Nuns in 1939 is still
    going strong
  • Up to 15 women live in the house at any one time
  • Children are welcome but the age limit for boys
    is 12
  • They can stay for 2 months to help them to sort
    their situation out

De Regenboog - www.deregenboog.org
  • The main aim of De Regenboog (the Rainbow
    Foundation) is to offer as many homeless people,
    and especially addicts, low-threshold drop-in
    rooms and long term help
  • There is an open door policy, this provides a
    place for people to feel welcome, support basic
    necessities eg. food clothes
  • This is done through the 8 Inloophuizen
  • (drop in centres) across Amsterdam City
  • Centre

Missionair Diaconaal Project MDP Thuiskomen

  • Aimed at children and teens, with adult groups
    becoming ever more prominent
  • Educating youth about God in life lessons in
    a fun and creative way
  • MDP offers workshops in music, drama, cooking,
    dancing, sports, bible study, after school clubs
    to help working
  • parents also a service once a
  • month on Sunday

Kerkhuis - www.kerkhuis.nl
  • Assisting migrant churches in the Bijlmer
    district
  • Helping people in their own situations, helping
    people to understand their new surrounding
    culture
  • Services are provided to help people eg. language
    course, computer course internet cafe, doctors,
    councillors

Kuria - www.kuria.nl
  • Kuria is a hospice for terminally ill people
    offers medical, spiritual, emotional practical
    support
  • There up to 10 patients in the hospice at anyone
    time, they are there for the last 2 to 3 months
    of their lives
  • There is an Out Patients facility which provides
  • the same level of support through a
  • Buddy system
  • The patients are not restricted to stay
  • in the hospice, they can go out do
  • normal activities

Opvangcentrum Elandsstraat - www.opvangcentrum.we

  • A crisis shelter for young people who can no
    longer live in their own home
  • Clients can stay there for between 4 weeks to 3
    months
  • They can receive help for their situation
  • The clients have to attend college or work every
    day

Blikveld
  • Giving young people of Amsterdam a chance to have
    information on Christian views events
  • To give the Christian Youth of Amsterdam a face
  • Made for the youth by the youth
  • Aimed _at_ 12-25
  • It is a joint initiative between The Mission
    House, Oudezijds 100, PKA Church newspaper
    Horizon
  • Goals of Blikveld are to provide information,
  • interactive discussions opinions, on people,
  • places, help and events in Amsterdam
  • 3 parts page in Horizon, an E-zine a website
  • Hitting the streets of Amsterdam on 31st Oct

Missionair project Hebron - www.noorderkerk.nl
  • A missionary project of the Noorderkerk in
    Amsterdam centre
  • Situated in a district of Amsterdam, containing
    10,000 people 35 different nationalities
  • They run different groups for all e.g. kids
    club,
  • men's group, women's group, a group for
  • the older generation

The Mission House Team
  • The Mission House Team is made up of 8 people
    from all over Europe. Previous nationalities in
    The Mission House have been Hungarian, Dutch,
    German, Swedish, British Belgian
  • This year in the house we have 2 Germans, 1
    Hungarian, 1 Dutch 4 British people
  • Iain (Houseleader), Robi, Ferdinand, Zoe, Kim,
    Erjo, Iain Sian
