2Donald Leu and Why we should Teach Information
Literacy
- To be newly literate means to take advantage of
the information resources that are on the
Internet, and that requires new reading and
writing skills. These new literacies are central
to our students' futures. Their futures are going
to be defined by their ability to read, write,
and communicate within networked information
environments." - Donald Leu John and Maria Neag Endowed Chair in
Literacy and TechnologyUniversity of Connecticut
3What do students need to learn about the Internet?
- Instead of wading through hundreds of potential
hits, students need to learn - how to focus their searching strategies and focus
on relevant information - how to recognize reliable resources and those
that are not reliable - what plagiarism is and how to avoid doing it
- how to paraphrase a selection
- how to give credit to their resources.
4What we will do in this presentation
- Present two different kinds of non-fiction
research projects for 4th grade students - Blend in lessons about information literacy with
both research projects

change and contribute to a webpage.
22What is a Wiki?
- A wiki is a page or collection of Web pages
designed to enable anyone (excluding blocked or
banned users) who accesses it to contribute or
