Houses
  • This half Term in Class 3 we have been learning
    about homes.

3
Introduction
  • We have been learning about homes.
  • A home is an enclosure that gives you privacy
and keeps you safe sheltered and comfortable.
Homes vary in size and construction. Some are and
made of leather , some are made of mud and some
    are made using bricks.
  • People around the world live in a variety of
    homes, these include houseboatstepeescave
housesigloos and mud huts. Some houses keep
people cool and some keep people warm.
  • Our presentation is going to show you just a few
of the things that we have been learning.

4
Homes are different
  • What kind of house do you live in? Do you know
    someone who lives somewhere unusual?

5
What kind of home do you live in?
  • I live in a cottage.

6
  • I live in a bungalow.

7
Barn
  • My house used to be a barn.

8
  • My house is semi detached.

9
  • I live in a flat.

10
  • I live in a pub.

11
  • My house is detached.

12
Victorian Houses
  • In Victorian times there was no electricity in
the houses so people did things differently.
  • To light the house they would have used candles,
    gas lamps or oil lamps.
  • They didnt watch television, they played games.
  • They used a carpet beater or a dustpan and brush
    instead of a vacuum cleaner.
  • They didnt have cars, instead they walked, used
a bicycle, used a horse or a horse and cart.

13
Victorian Houses
  • They used a fire to cook with to warm themselves
withto warm water for washing with and to heat
    the iron with.
  • Many people shared a bed with their brothers and
sisters as there wasnt much room. Mum and Dad
    slept in the other room.
  • They washed their clothes in a copper, using a
dolly, a washboard and a bar of soap.
  • There would have been no kitchen in a terraced
house, only a small scullery to do the cooking
    in.
  • They had to go to a little shed outside to use
    the toilet.

14
Different Homes
  • Homes are all different.
  • Some homes are made of mud, some are carved out
of caves, some are made of ice and some of
    bricks.
  • How is your home different to your friends home?

15
Tepees
  • Traditionally Native American Indians lived in
homes called tepees. They were made using animal
    hides and wooden poles.

16
Tepee Construction
  • YOU WILL NEED
  • Some long sticks
  • Some string
  • a sheet of material
  • Some pegs
  • What you do
  • 1.Put the sticks together.
  • 2. Tie the string around one end of the group of
    sticks.
  • 3. Spread the sticks out into a circular shape.
  • 4. Wrap the material around the sticks.
  • 5. Tie the material to the sticks at the top of
    the tepee shape.
  • 6. Peg up the doorway, using three pegs.
  • 7. Put a mat inside for comfort.
  • 8. It is ready to use!

17
Building Materials
  • Modern houses can be made using any material and
some light materials have to hold a large amount
of weight, either because the buildings are tall,
built partially underground or for other reasons.
  • We tested card to see which shape would hold the
    largest weight.

18
Strong Structures
  • What you need
  • Cardboard strips of the same length,
  • Weights,
  • Duplo lego
  • Glue gun.
  • What you do
  • 1. First you build two Duplo towers.
  • 2. Next fold or roll one of the card strips,
sandwich these between 2 card strips and glue to
    make it strong.
  • 3. Then rest the cardboard on the Duplo walls.
  • 4. Finally put the weights on your bridge to see
    how strong it is.
  • 5. We found that the strongest structure was made
by folding the card into zigzags before gluing it
between the strips of card. It held more than
    400g!

19
Modern Houses
  • Modern houses have lots of glass to give the
inside lots of light and to save electricity.
  • Modern houses can be any shape and can be made
    using virtually any material.
  • Modern houses can have lots of room inside and
can be bigger than Victorian terraced houses.

20
How to save electricity
  • Turn the lights off or put your lights on a
    timer.
  • Turn things off when you have finished using
them. Make sure you dont just use the remote
    control to turn things off.
  • To keep warm put a jumper on instead of the
    heating!

21
Quiz
  • Did old houses have electricity?
  • What does electricity need to make it work?
  • What is an old house made of ?
  • What is different between old homes and new ones?
  • Why do homes look different?
