EMBODIED WOOD The UK Mass Balance and Efficiency

Definitions
Mass Balance (in context for the study) The mass
of input wood into industry equals the mass of
output of wood product, emissions1 and waste,
plus any variation in stocks2. Ref Linstead, C
Ekins, P 2001 Mass Balance UK Mapping UK
Resource and Material Flow, RSNC, UK.

Balance resource use, wastes and
emissions
3
Energy Exclusion
For a mass balance study, the quantity of
interest in the process of energy generation is
the flow of matter associated with the process,
such as the emission of gases to the atmosphere
and the ultimate destination of combustion
residues. Because the energy created has no
mass it has no place as such in a mass balance
framework.

Outputs
  • Series of sector specific mass balance analyses
  • Aggregating to a UK mass balance summary
  • - Dissemination of findings recommendations
  • for waste flows and management
  • - Perceived economic benefits

Objectives Potential Benefits
  • - Promotion of the prudent use of sustainably
    grown wood
  • its benefits to the environment.
  • - Identification of best practice for waste
    management.
  • - Eventual reduction in the quantity of wood
    going to landfill.
  • - Benefits to industry
  • Practical information on industry waste
  • Reduced costs
  • Better efficiency of material utilisation
  • Industry compliance with requirements

Objectives of Mass Balance Research
Provide data for use in future planning of
resource use waste streams. Highlight to
Government/ Industry the need for greater
resource efficiency for wood utilisation. Assist
UK Plc to move towards a sustainable management
of wood as a material. Lead to an overall
reduction in wood waste. Encourage spread of
best practice for waste utilisation. Lead to the
development of sector focussed sustainable
strategies. Provide a greater awareness of
producer responsibility requirements.

PROJECT SUMMARY
15
Project Summary
Building block for Biffaward Programme on
Sustainable Resource Use. Links into other
sectoral studies. Highlights how efficiently /
inefficiently wood as a material this directly
impacts waste streams in the UK.
16
Project Summary
Lead to better education of industry by
identifying and dissemination best practice
information. Eventual reduction in wood waste
going to landfill. Provide indications towards a
more cost effective management wood flow through
the UK. Help facilitate policy making at
regional national level.
17
Methodology
Combination established techniques - Desk
research to identify relevant product codes -
Data collection Primary and Secondary research
- Market research program for each timber
sector - Data analysis
18
Data Collation
Desk Research - Published statistics - HMCE,
ProdCom, ICN etc. - Web based research,
consultation with pertinent trade
bodies/industry contacts
Field Research - Sectoral market surveys
Industry Consultation - Experts trade bodies
19
Assessment Validation
  • Industry advisors - (Individuals and trade
    bodies)
  • Review proxy measurement results presentation
  • Take a view where data inconclusive
  • Background information contacts
  • Review and approval of reports

Project Amendments
1) Stock a constant in general (very little
impact on results) 2) Accounting period under
study is Jan Dec 2002 3) Excluding energy (as
per the RSNC advice Mapping the UK Resource
Material Flows)
