Office of Science Strategic Plan20 Year Goals
  • ITER for Fusion Energy Provide the enduring
solution to our Nations energy challenge,
conducting the burning plasma experiment that
will bring fusion energy within reach as a
commercial source of clean, abundant energy.
  • Scientific Discovery through Advanced Scientific
Computing Expand the broad frontiers of
scientific discovery through the power of
    advanced computation.
  • Nanoscale Science for New Materials and
Processes Master the ability to construct
    revolutionary new materials and
    processesatom-by-atom and build upon Natures
    self-assembling techniques.
  • Taming the Microbial Worldthe Next Revolution in
Genomics Harness microbial genomes and the
molecular machines of life for energy, the
    environment, and human health.
  • Dark Energy and the Search for the Genesis
Illuminate the basic forces of creation and the
origins of matter, energy, space, and time.
  • Nuclear Matter at the Extremes Explore new forms
of nuclear matter at high-energy densities and at
    the extreme limits of stability.
  • Facilities for the Future of Science Deliver the
high-priority facilities over the next 20 years
that support DOEs and the Nations research.

5
Near Term Facility Status
  • ITER Negotiations ongoing regarding siting as
well as legal and financial issues.
  • UltraScale Scientific Computing Capability
    ORNL/ANL team developing Leadership Class
    machine.
  • Joint Dark Energy Mission Instrument will be
selected in peer reviewed competition sponsored
by NASA and DOE. RD continues on SNAP.
  • Linac Coherent Light Source RD and conceptual
design under way funding for long-lead
    procurement in FY2005 budget.
  • Protein Production and Tags Facility RD under
way. Project engineering and design funding in
    FY05 budget.
  • Rare Isotope Accelerator RD under way.
Request for Proposal to be issued in December.
  • Transmission Electron Achromatic Microscope RD
    and conceptual design under way.

6
Near Term Facility Status (Cont.)
  • Characterization and Imaging Facility Mission
    need approved. RD under way.
  • CEBAF 12 GeV Upgrade RD and conceptual design
    under way.
  • ESNet Upgrade First stage - core upgrade to 10
gbs - scheduled for completion in early 2005.
  • NERSC Upgrade No action. (Mission need approval
    not required.)
  • BTeV RD and conceptual design under way.

7
Laboratories for the Future of Science
  • SC is developing a document highlighting the
unique role and importance of the DOE Office of
Science (SC) Laboratories to the future of
    science.
  • It will sketch the future of each laboratory and
outline some of the major challenges that the
    laboratory complex faces.
  • The document will reflect DOE's vision for the
    future of the SC laboratories.
  • Due this Fall.
