Need Statement
Everyones Public Library in Somewhere, NJ will
collaborate with the City Department of Health in
promoting flu shots, their benefits and where to
go to obtain free flu shots. The City saw a
higher percentage of flu cases in the last year
than neighboring counties saw.

Needs Assessment
  • The Everyones Public Library librarians asked
    older adults on two successive Fridays, in a
    paper-based, at-the-door survey, if they used the
    internet for health information, what sites they
    used and if they knew how to look up information
    on flu shots. The results of the mini-survey
    were 50 used the internet for health
    information, 50 of the health information users
    used a search engine for locating information and
    most were unaware of how to use the internet to
    find location information (location of flu shots).

Identification of Target Population
Everyones Public Library is located in Union
County New Jersey, the 3rd most populous county
in New Jersey with native Spanish language
speakers, according to the 2000 census.
Everyones Public Library serves a city of
25,000 with a high percentage of older adults
(20 of the population). Previous library surveys
indicate that the older adult population uses the
library on average of once a week.

  • Goal To increase older adults awareness of free
    flu shot availability and where on the internet
    to turn for reliable health information
  • Objective 1 Provide training to library staff on
    HealthyNJ web site, particularly on locating flu
    information and flu shot locations

Methodology
  • The Library will host RML staff to teach the
    class, From Snake Oil to Penicillin Evaluating
    Consumer Health Information on the Internet for
    seniors
  • The Library will give out promotional items and
    written materials at the class and in prominent
    locations in the Library promoting HealthyNJ and
    flu shot information
  • The Library will promote its activities to
    seniors and to the City Department of Health
