Vignette 1

• A 4th year resident comes into the office
  and begins to comment on one of the applicants
  who happens to be a sister of one of the
  residents.  The resident states that the
  applicant was not dressed appropriately at the
  interview and that she should have worn a
  different dress or skirt.

Response 1

• The coordinator advised resident that this was an
  inappropriate comment and that it wouldnt be
  discussed any further.
• It was later discovered that the same 4th year
  resident also approached the applicants brother
  and mentioned the same thing.

Resolution 1

• The resident continued to make inappropriate
  comments the matter was referred to the Program
  Director.

• A resident gossips about other residents and
  staff.
• Resident inappropriately discusses patient
  information.

• Advised resident that this was inappropriate and
  unacceptable behavior. 
• Informed resident that if they had a valid
  complaint it should be directed to the
  appropriate authority for further action.

Program Director and Chief Resident made aware of
the situation. Chief Resident will discuss
professionalism issues at the residents meeting.

• Its okay to sometimes do favors but those of a
  repetitive nature makes it more of an issue.
• Coordinators should be directed should be
  directed and inform the residents that its not
  possible to continually do favors

• Program Director agreed to speak with the
  residents about the role of the coordinator in
  the program at a residents meeting.
