Title: APA Style: Methods, Results, Discussions

1
APA Style Methods, Results, Discussions
2
Method Section
  • Describe the details of the study
  • Participants
  • Materials and/or apparatus
  • Procedure
  • Allows colleagues to assess the validity of your
research and replicate what you did

3
Method Section
  • Participants
  • Describe who they are and how they were recruited
  • Materials and/or apparatus
  • Describe what you used Drugs, testing supplies,
    questionnaires or other dependent measures
  • Procedure
  • Describe exactly what you did
  • Explain the procedure like the reader is a
    participant

4
Results Section
  • Summary of your findings, including statistical
    analyses
  • Generally
  • Begin with things you did to your data to make it
    analysis-ready (Transformations, combinations,
    etc.)
  • Include things that would affect how you would
subsequently analyze your data (analysis of order
    effects, manipulation checks, etc.)

5
Results Section
  • Report analyses of hypotheses in the order that
    readers first saw the hypotheses
  • For each analysis, you want to present the
results of your test in English first
  • there was a main effect for alibi strength
participants thought a detective would find the
strong alibi more believable than the weak alibi

6
Results Section
  • Then you include the statistical information to
back up your description of what happened
  • F (1, 180) 40.38, p lt .05, Cohens f 0.47.

7
Results Section
  • So the whole thing reads like this
  • there was a main effect for alibi strength
participants thought a detective would find the
strong alibi more believable than the weak alibi
    F (1, 180) 40.38, p lt .05, Cohens f 0.47.

8
Discussion Section
  • Begins with a description, in English, of the
    results you found
  • Reiterates original hypotheses and explains
whether they were supported or not

9
Discussion Section
  • Moves somewhat broader
  • How do the current findings fit into the larger
    literature?
  • What holes do they fill?
  • What questions do they raise?
  • What are the implications?

10
Discussion Section
  • Discuss some limitations
  • What are some potential alternative explanations
    for your data?
  • How can we generalize these results?
  • Where can we go from here?
  • Future research?

11
Abstract
  • Very short overview of the study (100-120 words)
  • Write it last!
  • Components
  • Purpose
  • Participants
  • Method
  • Findings
  • Conclusion
