3
Background
  • Collaborative project with CE-5, CEG, Azové, and
    Engineers Without Borders
  • Disease related to pathogens is a problem
  • The World Health Organization has shown
composting toilets to be effective in reducing
the spread of disease and pathogens

4
Objectives
  • Design a composting facility for collecting and
treating solid and liquid human wastes
  • Demonstrate through scientific tests the
efficiency of this design in removing pathogens
  • Reduce exposure and subsequent illness due to
    intestinal parasites and disease
  • Make the design a sustainable solution

Future Direction
  • Continue Testing on Current Prototype
  • Finalize the plan for a second prototype
  • The second Prototype will be able to be taken
apart and reassembled along with more permanent
    design solutions

20
Future Goals
  • Meet WHOs guidelines for bacteria and worm
reduction MPN reduction of 4 log units
  • Meet US guidelines for pathogen reduction
    maintain 40ºC (104º F) for 5 days in barrels

21
Benefits
  • Communication skills
  • Creating and manufacturing prototype
  • Experience in lab testing
  • Expanded knowledge of the world, perspective
  • Bringing many components together to make a
    finished product

22
Summary
  • Develop a sustainable composting toilet design
  • Test the efficiency of this design
  • Reduce occurrence of disease spread through
    parasites
