A Hotel Room Booking
  • A local hotel manager wants to set up an
    automated booking system.
  • The system will store details of customers, rooms
    available, prices and bookings. Rooms cannot be
    double booked.
  • It could produce booking reports, rooms available
    and customer invoices.

A Sports Club Membership
  • A sports club secretary wants to store the
    details of its members electronically.
  • You can produce membership lists, details of
    membership payments, who is overdue, and send out
    reminder letters to them, and send out letters
    for meetings.
  • Store details of bookings of the clubs
    facilities, such as the gym, badminton and squash
    courts, equipment hire etc.
  • This system could be split into two.

  • A sandwich shop manageress takes orders from
    customers every morning from shops, offices and
    factories and delivers them in time for lunch.

    and regular orders, and provide a daily list of

  • The system could produce reports on daily items
    brought into the shop, and reports on when
    customers have used the shop.
  • It could also report on daily or weekly sales
    figures, and invoices for customers.

    of shoes brought in for repair, the type of
    repair needed, the names and contact details of
    the customers.
  • The system could produce reports on the work in
    progress, and work completed.
  • It could produce tickets for customers, store
    sales details and produce invoices for customers.

  • The system could store all the applicants
    details, who has and who hasnt applied.
  • Details of offers from universities recorded, and
    used as an on-line access to student records.

  • This could be a school based project.
  • The head of year 9 wants to store details of the
    option choices for pupils, including names of
    pupils, options available, and who has opted for
    what particular subject.
  • The system could produce lists of pupils and
    their opted subjects, subject lists for each
    pupil and reports on pupils who have not made
    their choices.

School Play Seat Booking
  • The Drama teacher wants to produce tickets for
    its school play on computer and store details of
    the tickets sold for the various performances.
  • The system might include what seats are
    available, the times and dates of performances,
    the cost of tickets, and what have been sold.
  • It should be able to produce up-to-the minute
    reports on sales and income and produce diagrams
    to show which seats have not been sold for each
    performance.

Work Experience Placements
  • This could be a school based project.
  • The work experience teacher wants to keep records
    of placements, including pupils details,
    employers details.
  • The system could produce details of pupils out,
    lists for classroom teachers, details of pupil
    visits, and employer contact names.
  • It could provide letters informing pupils and
    employers of details of the work placements.

The School Library
  • A school librarian wants to store details of
    reference books, loan books, and pupils.
  • The system could produce the details of books
    borrowed, and books that are overdue.
  • It should be able to produce a list of books out,
    and books currently available, when they have
    been borrowed, and when they are due back, and
    reminder letters for overdue books.

A Project Timetable
  • A timetable helps you spread out the project work
    evenly.
  • The project is broken into main tasks and
    deadlines for these will be given to you.
  • The whole project has to be finished and handed
    in by Easter next year.
  • Do not leave too much to do till the last minute
    your mark will be affected.
  • You have the Summer holidays to find yourself a
    real user ready to start in early September.
