PREAMBLE FOR TEACHING CODE OF ETHICS
The educator, believing in the worth and dignity
of each human being, recognizes the supreme
importance of the pursuit of truth, devotion to
excellence, and the nurture of the democratic
principles. Essential to these goals is the
protection of freedom to learn and to teach and
the guarantee of equal educational opportunity
for all. The educator accepts the responsibility
to adhere to the highest ethical standards. The
educator recognizes the magnitude of the
responsibility inherent in the teaching process.
The desire for the respect and confidence of
one's colleagues, of students, of parents, and of
the members of the community provides the
incentive to attain and maintain the highest
possible degree of ethical conduct. The code of
ethics of the education profession indicates the
inspiration of all educators and provides
standards by which to judge conduct.

TRUTH
THE TRUTH ABOUT TEACHERS
  • Only 22 percent of the general population has a
college degree, but most teachers have one. We
are an intelligent group of people.
  • The teaching profession is the ONLY profession in
which over half of its members have voluntary
advanced degrees. As of 1995, over 52 of the
teachers had degrees beyond a bachelor's degree.
Teachers are the intellectual elite of America.
  • Every tenured teacher has a teaching credential.
Teachers are an intelligent, certified, licensed,
    and competent group of people.

5
Engaged in, or worthy of the HIGH STANDARDS of
the profession
The rewards in education and life go to the
person who is a professional A professional is
defined not by the business a person is in but by
the way that person does his or her business
6
A professional is someone who, without
supervision or regulation
  • Is a responsible person
  • Has a continuing growth plan to better themselves
  • Strives continuously to raise the level of each
    new group of students

Teacher Behaviors
A person's behavior will determine what choices
are made.
  • There are 3 behaviors that are usually exhibited
    by teachers
  • Protective behavior - (are self-defeating) Spends
most of their time complaining or rationalizing
and therefore avoids what is expected of them and
divert their thoughts from the task at hand.
(They usually sit in the back row of meetings, in
    the lounge. )

8
2. Maintenance behavior - (are coping) Spends
most of their time coping and hoping that life
and work will improve. These are the hardworking
backbone of society however because they are
maintainers, they do nothing to rock the boat.
(They hope they can make it through the week,
always seeking sympathy. ) 3. Enhancement
behavior - (are self-enhancers) Spends most of
their time participating, learning and growing.
These are the "we" people (we need to find a
solution. . . ) Enhancement behaviors are leaders
and PROFESSIONALS.
Which kind of behavior do your exhibit most of
the time?

Qualifications and considerations of
PROFESSIONALISM
  • Professionalism exists only when a service is
performed for someone or the common good.
  • Professionalism is achieved only after extensive
    training and preparation
  • True performance as a professional is based on
    study and research

16
  • Professionalism presupposes an intellectual
    requirement.
  • Professionals must be able to reason logically
    and accurately.
  • Professionalism requires the ability to make good
    judgmental decisions.
  • Professionals cannot limit their actions and
decisions to standard patterns and practices.
  • Professionalism demands a CODE OF ETHICS.
Professionals must be true to themselves and the
ideals of their occupation and to those they
serve. Anything less than a sincere performance
is quickly detected and immediately destroys
    their effectiveness.

17
WHAT IS A CODE OF ETHICS?
  • A set of standards of conduct and moral judgments
    for a given profession.
  • A set of rules of conduct or set of principles.
  • What a profession means.
  • What one believes about their profession.

18
  • WHAT DO ALL OF THE TEACHERS CODES OF ETHICS HAVE
    IN COMMON?
  • Commitment to students
  • Commitment to profession
  • Commitment to public (parents/ community)
