  1. Inspect all parts and clean all parts. If any
    parts are worn or damaged, use new Caterpillar
    parts for replacement.
  2. Inspect all seals. Damaged seals must be
    replaced. Use new Caterpillar seals for
    replacement.

Install valve spool (50), spring guides (52),
springs (51), and plugs (49) in housing (2) .

11. Install washer (35), spring (33), and washer
(32) in cylinder block (28). Put the cylinder
block in a suitable press. Install a suitable
piece of square steel stock against washer (32).
Compress spring (33) and use Tooling (A) to
install retaining ring (34). Slowly release the
spring compression.

Position spring (8), stop (12), spring (7), and
servo cover (5) on the housing. Install two
longer bolts and install two original bolts (3).
Remove the two longer bolts and install the two
remaining original bolts.

Start By A. Remove the drum. Refer to
Disassembly and Assembly, "Drum -
Remove". NOTICE Care must be taken to ensure
that fluids are contained during performance of
inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and
repair of the product. Be prepared to collect
the fluid with suitable containers before
opening any compartment or disassembling any
component containing fluids. Refer to Special
Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and
Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies
suitable to collect and contain fluids on
Caterpillar products. Dispose of all fluids
according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Position wood blocks on both sides of the drum.
  2. Drain the oil from the final drive planetary into
    a suitable container. The capacity of the final
    drive planetary is approximately 2.3 L (0.6 US
    gal).

  • Attach a suitable lifting device and Tooling (A)
    to final drive planetary assembly (3) .
  • Remove bolts (4) and remove final drive planetary
    assembly (3). The weight of the final drive
    planetary assembly is approximately 180 kg (397
    lb).

Remove bolts (6). Remove plate (5) from the

plate is approximately 52 kg (115 lb).

Personal injury can result from being struck by
parts propelled by a released spring force. Make
sure to wear all necessary protective
equipment. Follow the recommended procedure and
use all recommended tooling to release the
spring force.

  1. Place the final drive planetary in a press.
    Compress the springs under retaining disc (2)
    enough to eliminate pressure on retaining ring
    (1). Remove the retaining ring.
  2. Remove retaining disc (2) .
  3. Remove 12 large springs (4) and four small
    springs (3) from brake (5) .
