Still a priority
  • Smoking is reducing but must remain a public
    health priority.
  • Widening health inequalities gap needs tackled.
  • Harder-to-reach audiences must be targeted with
    health messages and support.
  • Available and accessible cessation services need
    increased.
  • Youth work developed.
  • Licensing of tobacco retailers necessary for
    enforcement and deterrent.
  • Under counter sales to remove tobacco
    advertising.

14
Conclusions
  • Scotland is now a world leader in dealing
    comprehensively with second-hand smoke.
  • The campaign for legislation worked due to
cohesive, evidence based communications from a
    united coalition.
  • Continued campaigning led to smooth transition
to smoke-free public places and high compliance.
  • Still many tobacco control challenges ahead in
    Scotland, where smoking remains biggest
    preventable killer.
