Outline
  • History of the Hybrid
  • What is a Hybrid Electric Vehicle?
  • Benefits
  • Prices
  • Statistics of the Hybrid
  • Hybrids Currently Available

3
History of the Hybrid
  • 1959-
  • Henney Kilowatt was the first transistor-based
    electric car
  • 1990s-
  • automotive hybrid technology became successful
when the Honda Insight Toyota Prius became
    available
  • 2000s-
  • saw development of plug-in hybrid electric
    vehicles
  • 2007-
  • Lexus offers a hybrid sport sedan the GS450h
  • "well in excess of 300hp
  • becomes available starting Summer 2006 in US
    Canada.

4
What is a Hybrid Electric Vehicle?
  • A hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) is
  • vehicle using an on-board rechargeable energy
    storage system (RESS)
  • a fueled power source for vehicle propulsion.

5
Benefits of the Hybrid
  • Hybrid vehicles reduce petroleum consumption
  • (compared to ICE vehicles) by using three
  • mechanisms
  • 1.) Reducing wasted energy during idle/low
output, generally by turning the internal
    combustion engine off
  • 2.) Recapturing waste energy (i.e. regenerative
    braking)
  • 3.) Reducing the size power of the ICE engine

6
Prices
  • Hybrid vehicles are more expensive than
    traditional internal combustion engine vehicles
    (ICEV), due to-
  • extra batteries
  • more electronics
  • in some cases other design considerations.
  • The trade-off between higher initial cost lower
    fuel costs is-
  • dependent on usage - miles traveled
  • hours of operation
  • fuel costs.
  • A January 2007 analysis by Intellichoice.com
    shows that-
  • all 22 currently available hybrids will save
their owners money over a five year period. 23
  • Greeley Tribune says-
  • if gas stays at 3.30 a gallon, you can add the
    hybrid
  • vehicles' tax incentives.24

7
Statistics of the Hybrid
  • An R.L. Polk survey of 2003 model year cars
  • showed that-
  • Hybrid car registrations in the U.S. rose to
    43,435 cars (a 25.8 increase from 2002 numbers.)
  • California had the most hybrid cars registered
    11,425.
  • The proportionally high number may be partially
due to the state's higher gasoline prices and
stricter emissions rules, which hybrids generally
    have little trouble passing.

8
Statistics of the Hybrid Continued
  • Honda Civic Accord hybrids-
  • Sold 26,773 hybrids in the first 11 months of
    2004
  • Toyota has sold a cumulative 306,862 hybrids
    between 1997 2004
  • Honda has sold a total of 81,867 hybrids between
    1999 2004

9
Hybrids Currently Available
  • Automobiles and light trucks
  • Locomotives
  • Buses
  • Trucks
  • Military vehicles
  • Taxicabs
