Data Required for Major/Minor Type Design
Determination?
Supply data to support determination. - Why the
change NOT part of type design. - Why the change
does NOT effect the critical five. - Why the
change is NOT appreciable. - Why the change does
NOT effect safety. - Why the change is NOT at
product level. Can the modification be designed
such that it is a Minor change to Type Design?
3
Data Required for Major Alteration.
If it is a Minor Change to Type Design, and a
Major Alteration, the IA must still supply
approved data (manuals, analysis,
photos).Installation is to the approved
data.Use checklist available to determine if
all regulations have been captured.A Minor
Change to Type Design (Major Alteration) still
requires data for compliance to regulations!
4
Data Required for Major Alteration cont
  • Instructions for Continued Airworthiness.-
    Instruction of removal, installation.- Parts
    list.- Special Instructions.- Scheduled
    (annual) Inspection criteria.- Unscheduled (Hard
    Landing) Inspection criteriaInformation on the
future servicing of the modification by another
    mechanic.

5
Flight Manual Supplements
If the aircraft HAS a Flight Manual, AND the
modification changes the FAA Approved sections
(Limitation, Procedures..) the a Flight Manual
Supplement MUST be approved by the ACO.
(Requires Coordinated Field Approval)Have
Applicant supply manual hardcopy AND
electronically. (this allows ACO to modify),
6
Deviations from STCs
  • Deviations from STC must ask the same questions
as alterations from TC.-Is the deviation from
the a STC Major or Minor Change in Type
Design?-STC data must be available to the
installer and Inspector to make that evaluation?
(have they purchased the STC?)- Deviations may
then be approved on Form 337,Installed STC
    SA1234HJ with the following deviations

7
Responsibilities of the IA Conducting Annuals.
  • Verify the paper work (ie. Flight manuals, ICA
etc are current for all the modification
    INSTALLED on the aircraft.)

8
Example 1
  • Propeller installation on a C172.-Constant speed
installation but is not on the TCDS and not on
any STC.-2 larger in diameter to propellers on
TCDS-Equal diameter to propeller for which there
is an STC for this aircraft (not the same
prop)-Has been mated to engine on another
    aircraft TCDS (PA-28)-Has adequate installation
    instructions..Major / Minor? Data
    required? Regs?CFA?
    STC? Cert Basis?

9
Example 2
  • Aeromedical Installation in Mitsubishi MU-2Sled
Assembly (w/ electrics and oxygen bottles) has
been installed in Lear 35 and Twin Commander
under STC. -No STC available for
MU-2. -Different seat track attachments. -Weight
and Balance / Loading changes. -Electrical
    systems integration.Major / Minor? Data
    required? Regs?CFA?
    STC? Cert Basis!

10
Example 3
  • New Brakes on a Cessna 208A
  • Aircraft over 6000 lbs.
  • Brakes are TSO approved.
  • Brakes have been used on a Navajo.
  • Existing master cylinders are being used
  • Major / Minor? Data required? Regs?
  • CFA? STC? Cert Basis!
