Title: Seam Carving for Enhancing Image Usability on Mobile Devices

1
Seam Carving for Enhancing Image Usability on
Mobile Devices
2
Introduction
  • Currently writing a Masters dissertation.
  • Paper based on previously conducted Pilot Study.
  • Topics covered
  • Seam carving
  • Adaption to mobile context
  • Small scale user study

3
What is Seam Carving?
  • Algorithm developed by Avidan and Shamir in ACM
    SIGGRAPH 2007.
  • Idea is to preserve as much of an images
    original energy as possible.

4
What is Seam Carving?
  • Determine the energy contained in an image
    (Gradient magnitude).
  • Calculate the least cost seam using dynamic
    programming.
  • Remove the least cost seam.
  • Repeat until desired size reached.

What is Seam Carving?
8
What is Seam Carving?
  • Can be used to expand as well as contract images.
  • Can be used to remove objects from a scene
    without it being noticed.
  • Objects can also be protected.

9
Algorithm Variants
  • Seam Carving algorithm runs slowly, especially on
    mobile devices.
  • Alleviated somewhat by index maps.
  • Variants
  • Straight Line
  • Random
  • Least Resistance
  • Least Resistance algorithm variant requires
    further work.

10
Pilot Study
  • 6 participants.
  • 3 female, 3 male.
  • In their 20s.
  • Six images.
  • Data capture using questionnaire.
  • 20 minutes to complete on average.
  • Two phases
  • Picture viewing phase.
  • Post viewing phase.

11
Pilot Study
  • Pilot Study software written.
  • Mimics typical mobile interface screen (240x320).
  • Users browse versions of a selected image.

12
Pilot Study
  • Participants struggle to accept seam carving
    generally.
  • Strong positive and negative reactions
  • Users found the best application of the seam
carving algorithm was to the beach photo.
  • Worst reaction was of a babys face, felt most by
the women. Faces should be protected.

13
Pilot Study
  • Smart seam carved photos were preferred over seam
    carved photos.

14
Conclusions
  • Seam carving works well in some situations, but
    not all.
  • Smart seam carved photos better than seam carved
    photos.

15
Status of Work at Present
  • Larger user study in progress.
  • Pilot study influences main study
  • Choice of images.
  • Layout of questionnaire.
  • Choice of image processing techniques.
  • Actually uses a real Pocket PC device.
  • Dissertation
  • Image Processing for Mobile Devices.
  • General techniques for enhancing image usability
    on mobile devices.
