You Can Engineer
  • (But Can You Talk About It?)

4
What can we do in 180 minutes?
  • We can Answer three questions
  • 1st Hour - TODAY!!!!
  • How do you target your Audience?
  • 2nd Hour
  • How do you ensure a good presentation?
  • 3rd Hour
  • How do you improve the Presenter?

5
Targeting your Audience
  • (forget yourself)

6
forget myself?
  • What does this mean?
  • You know your topic. You know it so well that
  • asking if you understand your slides is a waste
    of
  • time.
  • Of course YOU understand everything YOU worked
  • so hard on! So, forget YOU!
  • Worry about the people who might not
    understand...
  • your Audience.

7
Targeting your Audience
  • target
  • One to be influenced or changed by an action or
  • event. A desired goal.
  • tr.v. targeted, targeting, targets
  • 1. To make a target of.
  • 2. To aim at or for.
  • 3. To establish as a target or goal.
  • Idiom on target
  • Completely accurate, precise, and/or valid
  • The Presentations were right on target.

8
Targeting your Audience
  • The Audience is to be influenced or changed by
  • your presentation.
  • 1. You need To make a target of the Audience
  • 2. You need To aim for Audience understanding
  • 3. You need To establish the Audience's
understanding as your target or goal.
  • You need your presentation/paper to be completely
  • accurate, precise, or valid right on target.

9
Who Are Your Audience?
10
Who Are Your Audience?
  • Who are you trying to communicate with ?
  • Does everyone speak the same language ?
  • Does everyone define words the same way?
  • An American says "eventually" meaning
  • "not now but later". To French ears it means
  • "maybe".
  • An American says "I can" meaning "I volunteer".
  • To Chinese ears it means "I am able but I have
  • not volunteered to do it"

11
SO...You think you can Target Your Audience?
  • Exercise 1
  • Step 1 - Seminar Participants will attempt to
target various audiences using a piece of paper
on which they have written the following letters
in a column A through J. On the next page is a
photo of audiance "A". The rest will follow.
  • Step 2 - On the page following the audiance
photo is a list of things a presenter might say
or do. Match each saying to the audiences you
    have just written down.
  • (You can write the numbers next to each letter
    to make it easy)

Who's Your Audience at Teradyne?
  • Engineers
  • Multi-cultural
  • Multi-linguistic
  • Multi-generational
  • From different educational systems
  • With different levels of experience
  • With experience in different areas ...

34
What if You...
  • ...are trying to target these Engineers?
  • ......Hmmmmm, this target is not narrow.
  • In fact, it is very broad...
  • So What Do You Do?

35
How do You Target a WIDE Audience?
  • SIMPLE
  • Make Your Presentation clear to all levels of
  • understanding, linguistic ability, and expertise.
  • BUT, HOW ?

36
How? First...
  • Answer ALL of these questions in your
    presentation
  • What are you going to tell the Audience about?
    What is your topic?
  • INTRODUCE
  • How will your topic be useful to them?
  • INTEREST

37
How? First...
  • Answer ALL of these questions in your
    presentation
  • What will they get to take home with them?
  • MOTIVATE

38
How? First...
  • Answer ALL of these questions in your
    presentation
  • What can you do in a mere 20 minutes?
  • EXPLAIN
  • What can you NOT do in a mere 20 minutes?
  • EXPOUND
  • What can they do to learn more on your topic?
  • EXTEND

39
How? Second....
  • Consider using a written handout
  • For Engineers who read better then they "hear"
    your language
  • To provide a clear formulas and equations from
    your rapidly changing slides
  • To give the Audience a problem to work from your
    topic
  • To provide "notes" so Audiences can listen
    instead of write
  • To explain complex concepts to less experienced
    Audience members
  • To give advanced engineers more specifics then
    time will allow

40
How? Third...
  • Use clear, concise language
  • Speak slowly and clearly
  • Use one word instead of three
  • Delete unnecessary adjectives
  • Use common language but no slang
  • Define all abreviations, acronyms and terms
  • Every time
    you use them
  • OR
  • Provide
    a glossary up front
  • OR
  • Dont use them

41
SO...You think you are Right on Target.
  • Demonstration
  • Everyone was asked to bring a stapler and
staples to this ACT seminar. Please get out your
stapler and empty it of staples. Please be
    prepared to reload your stapler.
  • As seminar leader I am going to take you all
through a simple task. All I ask is that you do
exactly what I say and nothing else.
  • NOTHING ELSE

42
Follow these instructions EXACTLY
  • Grasp the stapler by the top and the bottom.
  • Pull apart until the stapler opens.
  • Drop the staples into the space.
  • Close the stapler by pushing the top and bottom
    together.
  • If your stapler is not correctly loaded, please
    tell me.

43
Follow these instructions EXACTLY
  • If you have a Boston model 50 stapler
  • On the end opposite where staples come out is a
    silver button which says "Press"
  • Press the "Press" button
  • A silver staple bar slides out the opposite end
    of the stapler
  • The staples should be placed carefully over the
sliver staple bar so the bar fills up the
    interior of the "U-shaped" staples.
  • Using one finger gently push the silver staple
bar back into the stapler until you hear it click
  • Your stapler is now ready to staple
  • Now you have seen the very real struggle to be
    completely accurate, precise, and/or valid
    right on target

44
Now You Know how to TARGET
