Origin

• Nitinol is an acronym for Nickel Titanium Naval
  Ordnance Laboratories
• It was developed by William Buehler and Frederick
  Wang
• A shape memory alloy is an alloy that remembers
  its shape.
• Nickel-Titanium alloys were first developed in
  1962 and 1963.

How It Works

• One Way
• When cold, the material will deform and stay in
  the deformed shape
• Upon heating, it will return to its original
  shape
• Two-Way
• Material remembers two shapes, one for low
  temperature and one for high

• Hydraulic Line Couplings (For Airplanes)
• Eyeglass Frames

• Energy Inefficiency
