Nursing
  • A dynamic process involving nurse, client, and
    significant others in a humanistic relationship
    to achieve optimum wellness or a dignified death
  • Goal of nursing according to Orem is to assist
    others in the design, provision, and management
    of systems of self-care to improve or to maintain
    human functioning at some level of
    effectiveness.
  • Nursing achieves its goal through the use of the
    nursing process.

Levels of Nursing Education and Practice
  • Associate Degree Nursing Education
  • Directed toward preparation of graduates who
    competently fulfill roles of provider of care,
    manager of care, and member of the discipline of
    nursing
  • Upon licensure as RN, provides care for clients
    with common complex health problems in a variety
    of settings
  • Supervision of other health care providers is
    provided by RN with more advanced educational
    preparation and/or experience
  • Baccalaureate prepared RN fulfills roles of
    researcher and manager of care for communities
    and health care delivery systems

  • Practical Nurse Education
  • Prepares graduates upon licensure as LPN to
    fulfill role of provider of care, including
    delegation of some care and member of the
    discipline of nursing
  • PN graduate upon licensure as LPN provides
    nursing care for clients in structured health
    care settings under the direction of a registered
    nurse or others as designated by law

  • Viewed in holistic manner with the potential to
    interact and adapt to internal and external
    environments in order to maintain his fullest
    potential
  • Unique, multidimensional, dynamic being with many
    factors affecting his state of wellness at a
    given time

    ability requires a knowledge of physical and
    psychosocial development
  • Eriksons Psychosocial Development Theory is used
    a basis for evaluating psychosocial development
  • Maslows Heirarchy of Basic Needs and Piagets
    Cognitive Development Theories are utilized in
    studying and evaluating human development
  • Sociological and cultural factors related to
    values, mores, motives, and lifestyle are
    explored as they influence the individuals
    decision to seek health care or not

    adapt to changes in himself or his environment
    which may alter his position on the
    health-illness continuum
  • Optimum wellness depends on an individuals

  • Health care delivery systems exist to assist
    clients and/or significant others to reach
    optimum wellness or a dignified death
  • An individuals position in his family and
    community affects his definition of health,
    health needs, and health care
