Why Bankroll Management is so Important at Poker
Tables
  • Bankroll is the amount of money a player keeps
aside to play Poker. It is your capital that you
use only to play Poker games. At live tables,
your bankroll is the money you use to buy chips
to wager on the table. When you play online, the
amount available in your Poker wallet to invest
at the tables is your bankroll. Along with the
basics of how to play poker, it is also important
to learn how to practice bankroll management to
    become a successful player.

What is Variance?
  • A variance is a statistical measurement of how
much money you can earn at the tables in the long
run versus the potential results of your gaming
session in the short term. You can consider it
the difference between the downswings and
upswings you face at the tables. If, as per the
calculation, the variance is negative, that means
the profits you make at the tables are not as per
your expectations. If the variance is high, it
can put you on tilt and lead you towards
making impulsive decisions. A sound bankroll
helps you minimize the negative effects of
variance in your game in the long run.

What should be the size of your bankroll?
  • Recreational players (who play just to enjoy the
game, not to make money) can keep a small
bankroll. Professional players need to have a
strong bankroll in order to participate in mid
and high stake games and save themselves from
facing financial troubles when you face
downswings. What matters the most is playing only
at stake levels that match your skill-set. If you
are a beginner, it is advisable to play at free
tables to learn the basics such as poker hand
rankings, betting actions, table positions, etc
before starting playing with real money. Move the
level up only when your bankroll allows you to do
    so.
