III. College InformationChoosing A College
  • Things To Consider
  • One of the most important decisions is choosing
which college to attend. There are many things to
consider in deciding to which schools to apply
and then in making your final decision on the
basis of which schools accept you.
  • Here are some sample questions taken from our
    handout on choosing a college.
  • 1. What colleges offer the kind of education or
    training I am interested in?
  • 2. Do I meet the admission requirements for the
    schools I am considering?
  • 3. How academically challenging is the school?

10
III. College InformationCollege Admission Testing
  • CSU
  • SAT I Or ACT (both are accepted. Cal Poly
suggests students take both, but prefers the ACT)
(Students with a GPA of 3.0 or above may be
admitted without either test, however, they are
encouraged to take the SAT 1 or ACT for
    supplementary criteria used for decision.)
  • UC Most Private Universities
  • SAT I Or the ACT AND 3 SAT II Subject Tests
  • Math IC OR Math IIC
  • Writing
  • Plus one of the students choice -- whatever
subject will receive the highest score.

11
III. College InformationWhat is a good SAT
Score?
  • Scored out of 800, the mean for the verbal
section is 504, the mean for the math section is
    516.
  • Each College and University publishes the average
scores of students admitted by year. See School
    Profile for each university.

12
III. College InformationThe UCs New Essay Topics

opportunities you have had to prepare for
    college?
  • 2. Potential to Contribute
  • Tell us about a talent, experience, contribution,
or personal quality you will bring to the
    University of California.
  • 3. Open-Ended
  • Is there anything you would like to tell us to
know about you or your academic record that you
have not had the opportunity to describe
    elsewhere in this application
  • Applicants need to respond to all three short
answer questions using a total of 1,000 words.
  • Two of your answers must be limited to
approximately 200 words each. A third question
should be given an extended answer of at least
600 words. You may choose which question to
    answer at more length

  • DAP students who apply and are admitted to a
specific UC campus will be guaranteed a place
provided they complete an academic contract at a
    California Community College

22
III. College InformationDAP Eligibility
  • Eligibility is determined via the ELC transcript
review process and identifies promising students
who rank near the top of their high school class,
but who have not met all of the requirements to
attend UC straight out of high school.

23
III. College InformationCommunity Colleges in
California
  • Transfer Programs
  • Community colleges offer a full range of academic
courses, covering the first two years of college,
that enable a student to prepare to transfer to a
U.C. or C.S.U. campus or to a private college.
  • A community college counselor will help you
organize your program so that it will be
accepted, especially by a U.C. or CSU campus, and
you will not lose any credits when you transfer.
    www.assist.org
  • A 2.4 GPA in required, transferable college
coursework at a community college makes you
    eligible for transferring.
  • Admissions Tests
  • No college admission tests are required. However
if you are thinking of transferring to a private
college it is recommended that you take the SATs
    during high school.
