Why Use Natural Pigments?
Synthetic pigments today are made to serve the
paint industry, in which producing paints for
artists plays a minor role. To achieve maximum
desirability in paint today, pigments are made
homogenous in shape, size and composition. For
example, to increase the covering power of
pigments, particle sizes are made as small as
possible. The smaller the particles, the more the
color nuances of the pigment are reduced to its
basic hue, as in inks that have no texture.
Particles that are homogenous in shape and size
also tend not to settle quickly and separate from
the binder during storage. This increases the
shelf life and thereby the marketability of
paint, but reduces its beauty as a color for
artists use. As Anita Albus wrote in Art of
Arts, The result is not perfection, but
sterility.

Azurite (Coarse) 10g
Azurite (Coarse) is a natural carbonate of copper
usually described as a bright blue or sometimes
as a greenish blue. Azurite varies in masstone
color from deep blue to pale blue with a greenish
undertone depending on such factors as the purity
of the mineral and the grade (particle size) of
the pigment. This fine grade (average 105 micron
particle size) of azurite is a pale blue with a
greenish gray undertone.
4
Ultramarine Ash 50g
Lazurite is a rare blue mineral found with other
minerals in a rock called lapis lazuli. We buy
select pieces from one of the oldest lazurite
mines in Badakhshan, Afghanistan. Pieces are
finely ground and levigated to obtain the highest
purity.
5
Realgar Pigment
Realgar is a natural mineral of arsenic sulfide,
usually described as orange red to orange yellow.
We obtain realgar from deposits in the Hunan
province of China where it is found in druses of
beautifully formed crystals.
6
Vermilion 10g
Our vermilion is red mercuric sulfide made from
ore deposits in the Huan province of China and
prepared according to an Chinese ancient process.
It exhibits a beautiful masstone color of strong
red with a tendency toward reddish orange.
7
Prussian Blue 4 oz vol
Prussian blue, discovered in 1704 or 1705, is
generally regarded as the first of the modern
colors. In truth it is something of an anomaly,
appearing well before the blossoming of chemistry
as a science in the late 18th century.
