The Heart of design education Studio Hands-on
making Design studio is not a classroom in which
you passively receive knowledge. It is a working
environment, a hands on learning site with about
15-25 students. Students are assessed by taking
part in this working environment and the
production of substantial design work during the
studio time. As a result, the contact hours in
studio are much longer than those in other
courses, ranging from 7-15 contact hours per
week. Present and Critique The creation of
design is a collaborative act that involves a
wealth of knowledge and individuals. Unlike other
disciplines, design studio grades are not based
solely on the accumulation of points there are
no exams or blue books. Work is assessed through
a sequence of critiques. Critiques are frequent
discussions that occur through the semester and
during final reviews with the instructor and
classmates. Communicate and Connect Students
typically are exposed to collaborative projects,
real clients, hands-on learning, community
interaction, economic issues and the realities of
design within constraints.

Core Design Program Portfolio Reviews
Each first-year student in the College of Design
has an opportunity to apply to one or more of the
colleges undergraduate programs. Students are
reviewed on the basis of a portfolio of original
work (projects from DSN S 102 and 131),
scholastic performance, and a written essay.

Core Design Program Enrollment Each year
600-650 students are enrolled in the Core Design
Program. Upon completion of the Core.
3/4 of those who apply are accepted into
enrollment managed programs 1/2 of those who
apply are accepted into their first choice
program.

Abroad Rome Program
The college's flagship international program has
given more than 1000 students the opportunity to
study in Rome since its inception in 1991. It is
the only fully licensed study-abroad program in
the Iowa Regents' system.
