History
  • The history of computers starts out about 2000
years ago, at the birth of the abacus, a wooden
rack holding two horizontal wires with beads
strung on them. When these beads are moved
around, according to programming rules memorized
by the user, all regular arithmetic problems can
    be done.

4
  • Blaise Pascal is usually credited for building
the first digital computer in 1642. It added
numbers entered with dials and was made to help
    his father, a tax collector.

5
  • In 1822 Babbage began to design an automatic
mechanical calculating machine, which he called a
    difference engine.

6
Electrical Numerical Integrator And Calculator
  • ENIAC is commonly accepted as the first
successful high - speed electronic digital
computer (EDC) and was used from 1946 to 1955.

7
  • Early in the 50s two important engineering
discoveries changed the image of the electronic -
computer field, from one of fast but unreliable
hardware to an image of relatively high
reliability and even more capability. These
discoveries were the magnetic core memory and the
    Transistor - Circuit Element.

DOS
  • DOS was one of the original operation systems
    available for a PC
  • An understanding of DOS is still important for
    troubleshooting and maintenance

12
Basic DOS Commands
  • DIR
  • CD, MD, RD
  • COPY, XCOPY
  • VER
  • MEM
  • EDIT
  • FORMAT

13
DIR
  • A Directory is a partition of your hard drive
  • Like a folder

  • XCOPY allows you to copy a directory structure

16
VER MEM
  • VER tells you the version of DOS
  • MEM tells you how much RAM is installed in the
    computer

17
AUTOEXEC.BAT
  • Allows you to automate the startup of your
    computer
  • Not used much in Windows 95
  • Still helpful for devices without Windows 95
    drivers

18
CONFIG.SYS
  • CONFIG.SYS is used to customize DOS.
  • Device drivers and memory configuration
parameters are often found in CONFIG.SYS
  • CONFIG.SYS can be used to support devices without
    Win95 drivers

19
WINDOWS 95 Configuration
  • Windows 95 uses a GUI to configure the hardware
    in the computer
  • The GUI is called the Device Manager

20
WINDOWS 95 Configuration
  • The device manager can be found by right clicking
on MY COMPUTER and choose Properties
  • Once the System Properties window is displayed
    choose the Device Manager tab

21
Buzz Words
  • How many are there?

22
Assignment
