1.0 RIGID OR FLEXIBLE COUPLING?
  • Used to connect shafts that are precisely aligned
  • Accommodates misalignment
  • Dampen vibrations or shock load
  • Used for most industrial applications, rather
than rigid coupling, because of these multiple
    functions

MASKA 2009-M2
5
1.0.1 TYPES OF FLEXIBLE COUPLINGS
A. Metallic types
  • Torsional stiffness
  • Operates in relatively high ambient temperature
and/or in presence of certain oils or chemicals
  • Electric motor drive only - not recommended for
    combustion engine
  • Applications with relatively constant loads

B. Elastomeric types
  • Torsional softness (absorbs shock and vibration)
  • Allows more angular misalignment between shafts
  • Lower cost and lighter weight
  • Smoother and quieter operations

MASKA 2009-M2

1.0.2 Flexible coupling - Elastomeric
types
  • Maska Starflex
  • compression type can transmit more torque in
less space and easy to install
  • 4-FLEX
  • shear type allows torsional wind-up and
  • transmits higher torque
  • Maskaflex
  • shear type coupling generally produces
  • lower shaft loads when submitted to parallel
  • offset misalignment

MASKA 2009-M2
7
1.1 Jaw Coupling - compression type
  • First patented in 1927
  • Simple design - three components two hubs and
    one elastomeric element
  • It is called a compression type coupling, because
torque is transmitted by conversion between the
driver hub and the driven hub

MASKA 2009-M2
8
1.1.1 Features of Maska Starflex coupling
  • Fail-safe when equipment cannot be allowed to
stop. If the elastomeric element should fail, the
coupling will still transmit the torque due to
    the metal-to-metal contact.
  • Great capability to handle torque over loads or
    spike
  • Simple to install, compact and low cost
  • Angular misalignment is more limited than in
    shear-design

1.1.3 Element material
A. NBR Buna-N B. Urethane C. Hytrel D. Bronze
MASKA 2009-M2
11
1.1.4 Element material - NBR
Most commonly used element material for all
general applications - Pumps, gear box, etc.
MASKA 2009-M2
12
1.1.5 Element material - Urethane
  • Greater torque capacity than rubber
  • Good abrasion / wear resistance
  • Better resistance to environmental conditions
such as ozone, ultraviolet and some oils or
    chemicals agents.
  • Should not be used in cyclic or start/stop
    applications
  • Limited to 160F

MASKA 2009-M2
13
1.1.6 Element material - Hytrel
  • Higher torque capacity than rubber and urethane
  • Best chemical resistance, compared to urethane
    and maximum temperature of 250F
  • Angular misalignment less than urethane and
    rubber. 1/2 compare to 1
  • As urethane, should not be use in frequent
start/stop applications or regular shocks and
    vibrations

MASKA 2009-M2
14
1.1.7 Element material - Bronze
  • Not elastomeric, but an option for high
    temperatures, such as 450 F
  • Could be used in salt/marine applications
  • Only used in slow speeds, generally below 250
rpm, since its a metal-to-metal contact which
    increases wear

1.3 Features of Maskaflex coupling
  • Compared to other couplings in the industry, the
tire coupling is the most suitable for
    applications with shock loads, angular
misalignment up to 4 degrees or end float up to ¼
    inches.
  • It is made of natural rubber and reinforced
tension member bonded together. The element has a
special series of cables near the flange
attachment that offers longer life expectancy
    and prevents premature shear failure.

2.0 WELD-ON HUBS FAMILY
1) QD SERIES - GENERAL APPLICATIONS
2) XT SERIES - CONVEYOR PULLEY

WELD-ON HUBS ARE MADE OF STEEL TO
FACILITATE WELDING

2.1 Weld-On Hub QD
Product Features applications
  • The QD weld-on hub are used in a wide range of
applications such as plate steel sprocket,
    conveyor and fan blades.
  • All Maska Weld-on hub are made of steel since
cast iron is difficult to weld. Once a material
contains a high level of carbon, this will reduce
    welding capabilities.
  • Maska QD bushings have a synchronized keyway with
bolt holes so they can be easily used once two of
these need to be installed face to face on the
    same keyed shaft

2.3 XT Conveyor pulley
MASKA 2009-M2
28
2.4 XT Hubs Bushings
Product features
  • Not interchangeable with QD or any other bushing
even if it has a similar design.
  • Supply with hexagonal head cap screws and spring
lock washers like QD bushings for installation.
  • Van Gorp / Browning is the original manufacturer
of these kind of weld-on hubs

MASKA 2009-M2
29
2.4 XT Hubs Bushings
  • Taper is 2" per foot compared to QD which has ¾
    per foot.
  • XT bushings are shorter compared to QD and will
only fit in these hubs (XTH).
  • Only sizes XTB100 XTB120 are made of gray cast
    iron.

2.5 XT HUB BUSHING DESIGNATION
MASKA OFFERS STANDARD SIZES
  • Bore sizes in stock match with popular bearing
housing sizes to support the shaft-conveyor
    pulley assembly.
  • XTB Series number corresponds approximately to
the max. bore per model like Taper-Lock bushings
    nomenclature

MASKA 2009-M2
31
3.0 Short QD bushings
  • Standard QD J

short QD J
MASKA 2009-M2
32
3.0 QD BUSHING SHORT
  • Same features than the QD but with a shorter
barrel or taper length. 100 interchangeable with
    competitors.
  • Short QD bushings are only available from J
    through S.
  • Supplied with shorter Hexagonal bolts than QD but
still comes with set screw and lock washers
  • Would not be appropriate on v-belt pulley since
stability is required for multiple grooves pulley
so they are generally used face to face with
conveyor pulley or alone with a steel plate
sprocket, blade, impellers that are not too wide.
