WHAT DOES A NETWORK SYSTEM LOOK LIKE? Core
components people who know the content that
is to be taught people (instructional
designers) to design materials and activities,
i.e. courses instructors to interact with
learners as they use these course materials in
making their knowledge, who we will call
teachers producers and other experts in a
technology that delivers materials and allows
communication between teachers and learners
specialists to provide technical and other
student support evaluators to monitor outcomes
so that interventions are possible where failures
occur trainers to help all specialists in
continuous development of skills a management
guided by policy that links these different
pieces

the core of the network system is a small
management unit that draws on institutional
resources for selection and planning
programs managing course design training and

B. What does a good online course look like and
how do we develop one?
teaching a course is not the same thing as
designing a course General Design Principles
1. Good structure Includes 1a. Clear
objectives 1b. Content is organized in units and
sub-units 2. Completeness 3. Repetition 4.
Stimulation and variety 5. Open ended 6. Planned
participation 7. Feedback and evaluation
9
Assignment is central in teaching, monitoring
and training
Feedback from student to instructor Feedback
from instructor to administration
Depends on assignment
Teaching for student Training for instructor

C. What does good online teaching look like ?
Fundamental role is to facilitate individual
learning. Interaction is a key concept
Learnercontent Interaction Learnerinstructor
Interaction Learner-learner Interaction
Constructivist learning theory suggests
that Learning occurs when students generate
knowledge from within, not when they receive
information from outside. Learning activities
should enable learners to draw on personal
experiences Learning is a social activity and is
enhanced by shared inquiry Reflection and
meta-cognition are essential aspects of
constructing knowledge (Lambert et al., 1995,
pp. 17-18.)
14
Teacher roles Ask questions about content Ask
questions about experiences Ask questions to
encourage search for resources Have students
report their discoveries Have students analyze,
criticize, discuss their discoveries Link their
ideas, weave their comments Identify themes and
points of disagreement Summarize Attend to
affective dimensions welcome, thanks,
invitations. Contribute own experience in style
of shared inquiry.

learner support
  • System is a safety net for individuals when the
    system does not work.
  • Problems with course materials (my textbook
    didnt arrive)
  • Knock-on effect of personal problems (illness,
    family, travel, hurricanes) most common

    fee payments
  • Problems with instructor (usually grading, or
    slow responses)
  • Problems with other students (perceived
    offensiveness)
  • Technology problems
  • Seeking general advice (future courses, career,
    even personal)
  • Grey area
  • students looking for emotional support beyond the
    academic
