10History of the GI
- In March 1996 at Cape Town delegates developed
the GI vision - Assist countries in developing a national
structure for dealing with oil spills through the
mobilization of external assistance and industry
support at national regional levels - Encourage ratification and implementation on OPRC
and conventions relating to liability and
compensation
11The intent of the GI Programme
- Facilitate cooperation between government and
industry through sharing of expertise - Kick-start, in developing countries, activities
that will lead to sustainable contingency
planning - Ensure international support can be channelled to
these countries using existing response
arrangements - Identify focal points where national government
local industry can interact - Help governments leverage donor funds for
regional contingency planning activities
