• What is ECSS ?
• European Cooperation for Space Standardization
• An effort of ESA, European national agencies and
  industry
• ECSS goal
• To create a single European set of (space)
  standards for all European space agencies and
  industry

• ECSS origin
• In 1988 EUROSPACE (representing European
  industry) asked ESA and CNES to harmonise their
  PA requirements.
• In 1993 the European space community recognized
  the general problems and the European Cooperation
  for Space Standardization was formed.
• Members
• Full participating members are ESA and the
  national agencies of Belgium, Canada, France,
  Germany, Italy, Norway and UK.
• Industry is represented through EUROSPACE.
• EUMETSAT is an observer / liaison with ISO TC20
  SC13 and SC14

• Levels of ECSS standards
• Level 0 - describing policy and objectives of the
  ECSS system and its architecture
• Level 1 - describing the strategy in each domain
  (Management, QA and Engineering). Global overview
  of the requirements and interfaces between the
  elements of level 2.
• Level 2 - describing required objectives and
  functions for all aspects of individual domains
  and disciplines
• Level 3 - describing methods, procedures and
  tools to achieve the requirements of the level 2
  documents. Defining constraints and requirements
  for interfaces and performance of a product or
  activity.
