Singapore Open Exchange (www.sox.net.sg)
2
Current Situation
  • Network Layer-3
  • STIX in Singapore for more than 5 years
  • Starhub IX and other commercial transit
providers/ISPs started operation about 2 years
    ago
  • Exchange traffic via circuits terminated in ISP
    router at Layer-3
  • Network Layer-2
  • ATM exchange points eg. 1-Net
  • Private peering via ATM PVCs
  • Presents scalability issues lacks peering
    infrastructure
  • No neutral IXP at Layer-2 in Spore

3
Singapore Open IXP (SOX) Project
  • Proposal to create the first neutral public IXP
  • Open to all ISP/IXPs (both local and foreign),
IDCs, Content Providers, Business Parks, etc
  • Interconnects with non-commercial networks
    (SingAREN, NUSNET, MOEnet, Biopolis, etc)
  • Aims/Motivations
  • Localising traffic
  • Lowering transit costs
  • Neutral community approach
  • Landing point for foreign IP networks
  • Testbed for IPv6, IP multicast deployments or
    other new IP infrastructure technology
  • Provision of Value Added Services for smaller
ISPs (Akamai, Nomimum GNS, Web Proxy peering
    caches, etc)

4
SOX Roles
  • Ensure operational quality
  • Promote bilateral and multilateral peering
  • Promote expansion of IXP members
  • Training and experience building
  • Develop and deliver new service models

5
Asia Pacific IXP Infrastructure
  • Several initiatives to develop regional IXP
infrastructure (e-ASEAN task force, ITU, etc)
  • Abundant fibre capacities present in AP region
with new cable networks C2C, APCN2, etc
  • To improve connectivity among commercial and RE
    networks in AP region
  • Avoids US-Centric routing, for example Singapore
(SingAREN) to China (CERNET) routes via Chicago,
    likewise for SingAREN to APAN-JP
  • Government agencies industry need to work
together to develop AP IXP infrastructure
  • Interested parties include China MII, SOX,
    Ausbone

6
Architecture
7
Configuration
  • Cisco Catalyst 6500 Ethernet switch
  • 10/100/1000 Mbps switch ports
  • Cisco 5505 router for ATM-Ethernet Bridging
  • Primary segment/VLAN for public peering
  • Other segments/VLANs for IPv6, and IPv4
    multicast, private peering
  • Space for partners to co-locate their routing
    equipment

8
Operations
  • Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (iDA)
    licensed Services-Based Operator (SBO)
  • Cost minimised as part of community effort to
    encourage peering among ISPs
  • Members only need to provide own backhaul
  • Connectivity via any FBO or leased circuit
    provider (SingTel and Starhub)
  • 1-Net ATM PVCs, and ATM-to-Ethernet bridging
    provided

9
SOX IPv6
  • Objectives
  • To introduce operational IPv6 service, and to
facilitate the connectivity and deployment of
    IPv6 networks in Singapore
  • To operate IPv6 exchange point, and to
interconnect with other IPv6 backbones around the
    world
  • To learn from these early deployment exercises
    about the efforts/technologies needed for
    transiting from IPv4 to IPv6, i.e migration
    issues
  • To lay the foundation for IPv6 commercialisation,
and to provide a testbed for IPv6 applications

10
Singapore IPv6 History
  • Started in NUS IRDU in 1996 first ASEAN country
    to be connected to 6Bone.
  • Allocated 6Bone address block 3ffe1600/24
  • In 1999 SingAREN allocated production address
    block 20010208/35 (Currently, the only
available IPv6 production address block in
    Singapore)
  • Connected to 6Tap and 6NGIX, etc.
