Title: Teaching Methods: Instructional Elements and strategies to use in Computer Networking Instruction.

1
Teaching Methods Instructional Elements and
strategies to use in Computer Networking
Instruction.
  • Buz Lamson
  • EDTEC 448
  • July 2008

2
Present
  • The Presentation phase is used to develop and
frame the context for learning activities and
    outcomes. Motivational techniques and presenting
examples are a core of this stage.
  • Essential elements Motivational techniques,
    Anticipatory framing and Relevance

3
  • Use web 2.0 elements to frame the discussion,
providing context via historical information and
    relevant examples.
  • Provide an encouraging environment, and a hook
to establish the mood for the learning
    experience.
  • Provide clear objectives and evaluation methods.
I will display the require lab work at this time,
but do not hand it out to the students until the
    lab begins!

4
Question - Guide
  • Use discussion and presentation of learning
objectives to guide and present relationships
    between learning concepts.
  • Essential elements Framing, Presentation,
    Context
  • Use Web 2.0 images, video, guest speakers,
samples and narratives to inform, explore, and
try new experience and gain control of learning
    objectives.

5
Active Learning
  • Learners participate in an activity while
    constructing understanding of learning
    objectives.
  • Elements include Guided Practice, Participation
  • The most important step in transferring computer
    concepts and techniques to students!

6
  • Use a simulation program to explore learning
    objectives
  • Active learning via a participatory lab in which
students follow tasks via video projection screen
and perform tasks in a logical manner begin from
introductory and progressing to more complex.
  • During this lab identify key elements and allow
informal Q/A to promote active learning.

7
Collaborative Learning
  • Students work in groups to examine a problem.
    Increased dialogue, examination of different
    perspectives are staples of collaborative
    learning.
  • Elements include Participation, Guided practice
  • Use peer interaction to promote consensus,
exploring new and different ideas. Use examples
of previous class work to guide teams.

8
  • A difficult task in computer technology training.
Pitfalls include missing students, students of
    different levels of expertise.
  • Web 2.0 case studies and simulations can be
    helpful here.
  • Freeware for experimentation can also provide
    usability and participation.

9
Role Playing
  • Use role playing to promote learning in context.
Use realistic activities to examine learning
    objectives.
  • Elements include participation, guided practice
  • Use Case studies, narratives, and labs to frame,
    explore and try learning objectives
  • Try email and virtual field trips

10
Problem-Based Learning
  • Students examine learning objectives in context
by use problem-based scenarios. Student look for
alternative ways to solve a problem.
  • Elements include Presentation, Participation,
    Guided Practice
  • Use chat room, email, and labs in specific
    context to explore problem-based learning
    objectives

11
Evaluation
  • Clear, concise evaluation criteria must be used
to evaluate not only student retention /
learning, but the effectiveness of the lesson for
    the teacher as well.
  • (Some Basic Lesson Presentation Elements,
Madeline Hunter ) It is essential that students
practice doing it right so the teacher must know
that students understand before proceeding to
    practice.

12
  • This is particularly important in computer
    related technologies.
  • Procedure, syntax and proper process are
    hallmarks of quality computer networking.
  • Provide challenging, but relevant lab projects
    when possible.

13
  • I often have a 5 to 1 ratio in preparing the
evaluation tasks. I can spend 5 hours preparing a
quality 1 hour lab for the students.
  • Supplement with Web 2.0 strategies such as Case
Study reviews and software investigations via the
    Internet.

14
Summary
  • The WELES teaching methods can be used in a
variety of learning situations. Integration of
Web 2.0 and internet related support sites can
    supplement these basic techniques.
  • Incorporation of elements of good instruction in
relation to your learning context can facilitate
    quality instruction.
  • Challenge, motivate, and cultivate your students
    and the learning environment!
