As We See at a Glance . . .
  • The One The Other
  • - Is a Whore - Is a Bride

13
At Every Single Point in Chapters 17-22
  • John is in inviting us to compare and contrast
  • these two women
  • who represent these two cities.

14
Compare 17-18 21-22
  • 171 One of the seven angels who had the seven
bowls came and said to me, "Come, I will show you
the punishment of the great prostitute,

bowls full of the seven last plagues came and
said to me, "Come, I will show you the bride, the
    wife of the Lamb."
  • 173a Then the angel carried me away in the
    Spirit into a desert.

filled with abominable things and the filth of
    her adulteries.

wall with twelve gates perfectly balanced and
    the city measures . . . 12,000 stadia in
length, and as wide and high as it is long i.e.,
a CUBE! Holy of Holies/size of known world. .
. . made of jasper, and the city of pure gold, as
pure as glass. 19 . . . decorated with every kind
    of precious stone. . . . jasper . . . sapphire .

The great street of the city was of pure gold,
    like transparent glass.

  • The One a Whore, and the Haunt of Demons,
    Destined For Destruction
  • The Other a Bride, and the Home of the Triune
    God, Destined for Eternal Bliss
  • AND WHY MIGHT JOHN BE DOING THIS?

18
TO INITIATE A CRISIS for the Church
  • And why on earth would John want to do that?
  • Because
  • Although the churches have been promised a
    bridal destiny
  • A whole lot of them have begun living again
like/in accordance with the Great Whore of
    Babylon (being unfaithful to Jesus)
  • And thereby Showing that Her Destiny Might be
    Theirs!

19
You May Find it Interesting . . .
  • That in the 7 Letters to the 7 Churches (in chs.
    2-3)
  • When we Compare them to the Whore Bride (of chs
    17-22)
  • We See that
  • The Realities of BOTH
  • The Bride of Christ
  • The Great Whore of Babylon
  • Are represented within the Church

20
Bridal Destiny Represented in Promises
  • Jesus says that To those that Overcome
  • the tree of life (27)
  • in the midst of its (New Jerusalems) street
    the tree of life (222)
  • shall not be hurt by the second death (211)
  • on these the second death has no power (206)
  • a stone, . . . with a new name written (217)
  • city has 12 foundations, the names of the twelve
apostles of every precious stone (2114,19)
  • will give the morning star (226-28)
  • I am the bright morning star (2216)
  • will be clothed in white and have their name
in the Book of Life (35)
  • dressed in fine white linen and where you find
the Book of Life (1914 2012)
  •
  • sit with Me on My throne, andon His throne
    (321)
  • and the throne of God and the Lamb shall be in
    it (New Jerusalem) (223)

21
Problem is The Whore Also Represented
  • For, as Jesus says,
  • remove your lampstand (25)
  • And the light of a lamp shall not shine in you
    (Babylon) (1823)
  • holding the teaching of Balaam . . . eating food
    sacrificed to idols (213-14)
  •  the false prophet who had performed signs of
deceitto make them worship the beast (1920)
  • permit that woman Jezebelto deceive My servants
    into committing adultery (220,22-23)
  • The woman (Babylon)has caused all the
nations have drunk the maddening wine of her
    adulteries (183)
  • Repent(or) you will not know in what hour I
    will come upon you (33)
  • Woe to you, the great city (Babylon)for in one
hour has your judgment come  (1810)
  • you say, I am rich and have need of
nothingbut the truth is they are naked
    (317-18)
  • the woman says, I sit as a queenI will not see
sorrow but she will be left naked (187,
    1716)

22
TO INITIATE A CRISIS for the Church
  • Because
  • Although the churches have been promised a
    bridal destiny
  • A whole lot of them have begun living again
like/in accordance with the Great Whore of
    Babylon (being unfaithful to Jesus)
  • And thereby Showing that Her Destiny Might be
    Theirs!

23
And that is Why the Central Call in Chapters
17-18 (184) is
  • Come out of her my people!
  • So that you will not share in her sins,
  • So that you will not receive any of her plagues.

24
Raises Another Question
  • How Does the Church Come Out?

25
Seems that the Message of Rev 17-22, and in fact
the WHOLE BOOK OF REVELATION is answering this
Question
  • And the Answer IS
  • By Seeing the Love of Jesus
  • And more Specifically,
  • By Seeing the Love of Jesus, even for Whores Like
    Us

26
You See --
  • There is a tradition in Scripture
  • Of Jesus Redeeming Fallen Women
  • And Turning Whores into his Bride

27
We See this Tradition in
  • John 4 Where Jesus Embraces the Samaritan Woman
  • John 8 Where Jesus Forgives the Adulterous
    Woman
  • John 20 Where Jesus is seen to be married to
    Mary
  • Luke 7 Where Jesus forgives the Woman of Sin
  • The Book of REVELATION AS A WHOLE
  • The Whole thing has been moving to this Climactic
    Point
  • But in order to see it, we need remember the
    Story of Joshua

28
What Happens in the Story of Joshua?
  • Israel has been in the wilderness for 2 40
    years (42 years or 3 ½ decades) in 42
encampments, Moses dies, and then God tells
Joshua to get ready to enter the promised land.

29
Joshua 12
  • Now then, you and all these people, get ready
to cross the Jordan River into the land I am
    about to give them

30
What Happens in the Story of Joshua?
  • Israel has been in the wilderness for 2 40
    years (42 years or 3 ½ decades) in 42
encampments, Moses dies, and then God tells
Joshua to get ready to enter the promised land.
  • Joshua sends two spies into Jericho, who discover
a whore living there who is identified by her
    scarlet.

31
Joshua 21, 21
  • So they the two spies went and entered the
house of a prostitute named Rahab and stayed
there . . . And she tied a scarlet cord in the
    window.

32
What Happens in the Story of Joshua?
  • Israel has been in the wilderness for 2 40
    years (42 years or 3 ½ decades) in 42
encampments, Moses dies, and then God tells
Joshua to get ready to enter the promised land.
  • Joshua sends two spies into Jericho, who discover
a whore living there who is identified by her
    scarlet.
  • And then, after taking the ark of the covenant
and walking to the Jordan river with the 12
tribes, the river dries up and Israel, whos
about to do battle, passes through on dry land.

33
Joshua 314-17
  • So when the people broke camp to cross the
Jordan, the priests carrying the ark of the
covenant went ahead of them. . . . As soon as the
priests who carried the ark reached the Jordan .
    . . The water from upstream stopped flowing . . .
So the people crossed over . . . On dry ground.

34
What Happens in the Story of Joshua?
  • Israel has been in the wilderness for 2 40
    years (42 years or 3 ½ decades) in 42
encampments, Moses dies, and then God tells

    scarlet.
  • And then, after taking the ark of the covenant
and walking to the Jordan river with the 12
tribes, the river dries up and Israel passes
    through on dry land.
  • Joshua sees a man with a drawn swordand its the
LORD!and he falls at his feet, receiving a
    message from the Lord.

35
Joshua 513-15
  • Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up
and saw a man standing in front of him with a
drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went up to him
and asked, Are you for us or for our enemies?
Neither, he replied, but as commander of the
army of the Lord I have no come.
  • Then Joshua fell facedown to the ground in
reverence and asked him, What message does my
    Lord have for his servant?
  • The commander of the Lords army replied, Take
off your sandals, for the place where you are
    standing is holy.
  • And Joshua did so.

36
What Happens in the Story of Joshua?
  • Israel has been in the wilderness for 2 40
    years (42 years or 3 ½ decades) in 42
encampments, Moses dies, and then God tells
Joshua to get ready to enter the promised land.

    through on dry land.
  • Joshua sees a man with a drawn swordand its the
LORD!and he falls at his feet, receiving a
    message from the Lord.
  • And then, climactically, after Joshua is
commanded to walk around the wicked city of
Jericho for 7 Days and to do so 7x on the 7th day
so that when the 7 priests carrying the 7
trumpets sound their trumpets on the 7th day, the
people can give a LOUD SHOUT, and the city will
fall down with a crash. And it happens.

37
Joshua 61-5
  • The Lord said to Joshua, . . . March around
the city with all the armed men.
  • Do this for six days. Have the seven priests
carry trumpets of rams horns in front of the
ark. On the seventh day, march around the city
seven times, with the priests blowing the
    trumpets.
  • When you hear them sound a long blast on the
trumpets, have the people give a loud shout then
the wall of the city will collapse and the people
    will go up . . .

38
Joshua 66-27
  • SO
  • The seven priests carrying the seven trumpets
went forward, blowing their trumpets . . . They
did this for six days. On the seventh day, they
got up at daybreak and marched around the city
seven times in the same manner, except on that
day they circled the city seven times. The
seventh time around, then the priests sounded the
trumpet blast, Joshua commanded the people,
SHOUT! For the Lord has given you the city! . .
    .
  • When the trumpets were sounded, the people
shouted, and at the sound of the trumpet, when
the people gave a loud shout, the wall collapsed
. . . And they destroyed with the sword every
living thing in it . . . They burned the whole
city and everything in it . . .

39

people can give a LOUD SHOUT, and the city will
fall down with a crash. And it happens.
  • Everything is destroyed with fire, except for
Rahab the WhoreWho becomes the Bride of Israel,
    the ancestress of Jesus Christ.

40
Josh 625 Matt 11-17
  • They burned the whole city and everything in
it . . . BUT Joshua spared Rahab the prostitute
    . . .
  • . . . 5Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother
was Rahab . . . Thus there were fourteen
generations in all from Abraham to David,
fourteen from David to the exile in Babylon, and
fourteen from the exile or, 6 sets of 7
    generations to the Christ.

41
What Happens in the Book of Revelation?
  • John tells us that the people of God, in the time
of delay, are as though in a wilderness, and will
    be for 42 months or 3 ½ days or 1260 days (42
months _at_30 days)! But Jesus nevertheless tells
them to get ready to enter the promised land!

42
Revelation
  • The woman was given the two wings of a great
eagle, so that she might fly to the place
prepared for her in the desert, where she would
be taken care of for a time, times and half a
time, out of the serpent's reach (1214).
  • They the Gentiles will trample on the holy
    city for 42 months . . . will prophesy for 1,260
days . . . 8 Their bodies will lie in the street
of the great city . . . 9 For three and a half
    days (111-9).
  • "Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last.
18 I am the Living One I was dead, and behold I
am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys
of death and Hades. . . . "Behold, I am coming
soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to
everyone according to what he has done. 13 I am
the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last,
the Beginning and the End (117, 2212).

  • The new Joshua, Jesus, sends two spies into the
great city, figuratively called Sodom and
Egypt, and we discover later that this same
great city, also called Babylon, is home to a
whore who is also identified by her scarlet.

44
Revelation
  • And I will give power to my two witnesses . . .
and their bodies will lie in the street of the
great city, which is figuratively called Sodom
    and Egypt . . . (113,8)
  • The woman was dressed in purple and scarlet . .

46
Revelation
  • Then Gods temple in heaven was opened and
within his temple was seen the ark of his
    covenant (1119).
  • The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great
river Euphrates, and its water was dried up to
prepare the way for the kings from the East
    (1612).

  • On the Lords Day I was in the Spirit, and I
    heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet . . .
I turned around to see the voice that was
    speaking to me. And when I turned I saw . . .
One like a son of man, . . . Out of his mouth
    came a double-edged sword . . . When I saw him, I
fell at his feet as though dead.
  • Then he placed his right hand on me and said . .
. I hold the key to death and Hades. Write

multiplicity of 7s, all of them foreboding and
forecasting the judgment of the wicked city,
once 7 trumpets are sounded and we come to the
    7th 7 in a series of 7s (namely the last 7
angels), there is a LOUD SHOUT, whereupon the
city falls down with a crash!

50
Revelation
  • 7 Letters ? 7 Seals ? 7 Trumpets ?
  • But in the days when the seventh angel is about
to sound his trumpet, the mystery of God will be
accomplished, just as he announced to his
servants the prophets . . . The seventh angel
sounded his trumpet, and there were loud voices
in heaven, which said "The kingdom of the world
has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his
Christ, and he will reign for ever and ever
    (107, 1115).
  • 7 Visions ? 7 Bowls ? 7 Angels ? WHEREUPON
  • After this I saw another angel coming down from
heaven. He had great authority, and the earth was
illuminated by his splendor. 2 With a mighty
voice he shouted "Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the
    Great! (181) . . . After this I heard what
sounded like the roar of a great multitude in
heaven shouting "Hallelujah! Salvation and glory
and power belong to our God . . . 3 And again
they shouted "Hallelujah! The smoke from her
goes up for ever and ever."

  • The new Joshua, Jesus, sends two spies into the
great city, figuratively called Sodom and
Egypt, and we discover later that this same
great city, also called Babylon, is home to a
whore who is also identified by her scarlet.
  • We see the ark of the covenant and a body of
waters drying up so warriors can pass through on
    dry ground.
  • John sees a man with a drawn swordand its the
LORD Jesus!and he falls at his feet, receiving a
    message from the Lord.
  • And then, climactically, after we witness a
multiplicity of 7s, all of them foreboding and
forecasting the judgment of the wicked city,
once 7 trumpets are sounded and we come to the
    7th 7 in a series of 7s (namely the last 7
angels), there is a LOUD SHOUT, whereupon the
city falls down with a crash!
  • Everything is destroyed with fire, except for
those who will COME OUT! of the wicked city
like Rahab the Whoreso that they too can become
the Bride of Israel, the heirs and heiresses of
    Jesus Christ!
