Plants Perfect for Packs
Highsun would like to introduce our Plants
Perfect for Packs range. This range was
developed to take the guesswork out of selecting
plants for your pack production. For a variety to
be added into the range it must meet the
following criteria-
  • Early to flower
  • Genuinely dwarf with little to no requirement of
    PGR.
  • Has the WOW effect on the customer
  • Has shelf life in a pack
  • Shows ability to grow out from the pack

If a plant is selected to be in this range it
will be denoted by the Plants Perfect for Packs
symbol. This symbol will appear in our product
brochures and in our next plug and seed
catalogues. In the attached slides, we have our
first selections for the range.

New Look Red
Like eternal flames, the new Fresh Look
Celosias bear their feathery yellow and red
flower plumes all summer long. Fresh Look Red
and Fresh Look Yellow are very vigorous with
good basal and lateral branching. In the US, both
Fresh Looks won AAS Gold Medals at the variety
trials. In Europe, Fresh Look Red won the
Flueroselect Gold Medal for its outstanding pack
and garden performance, closely followed by
Fresh Look Yellow With a height of 35cm, their
outstanding floral display and garden performance
make these two award-winning varieties ideal
green leaf partners to the dark leaf AAS Winner,
New Look. Incredibly robust with excellent
garden performance and an abundance of long-lived
flowers, the Fresh Looks are a garden standout.

Diana
F1 chinensis
The Diana series is a real eye catching
Dianthus chinensis series both in pots and in the
garden. Dianthus Diana is early and has a compact
plant habit. These characteristics are the
guarantee for extremely good performance. The
large flowers are the standout feature of this
new series. Its unique compact and branching
plant habit is continued in the garden and shows
a vigorous low growing plant. This great
performance has resulted in Diana Crimson being
rewarded with the Flueroselect Quality Award.
Out of the eleven delicious colours three contain
an eye, Crimson Picotee, Red Centred White and
Purple Centred White. These three alone are real
Eye Catchers. Together with the other five, we
are able to create a vibrant coloured formula
mixture. cont..

Chiba
F1 chinensis x barbatus
The Chiba series are extra early flowering and
have a compact, basal branching plant habit. In
this class of Dianthus, Chiba is the most compact
series. The short and strong flower stems show
clusters of well-rounded flowers. Because of its
compactness Dianthus Chiba does well in
high-density pack or small pot programs. This
series is suited for production in 10-12cm pots.
Dianthus Chiba requires less growth regulator and
is cold tolerant. Height - 20-25cm. Colours

Xtreme
The next generation in Impatiens breeding!
Xtreme Impatiens have been bred with the grower
in mind and truly define the standard for
cutting-edge performance. This outstanding new
series is by far the best choice for growers
looking for a uniform, early and compact series
with renowned Goldsmith seed quality. Xcellent
seed quality 95 germination. Ideal for high
density pack production. Xtreme is uniformly
well branched on the bench but remains compact.
Reduced stretching means longer shelf life at all
points along the chain. 8 colours begin this
Xciting range. In our trials they were grown in
140mm pots which filled quickly and were covered
with flowers earlier due to the lateral branching
in the centre of the plant. This ensured the
whole pot was covered and not just at the growing
tips. Container Size Packs and Larger Height

Petunia

Limbo
Limbo how low can you grow
Petunia Limbo is a brand new concept in
grandiflora Petunia and is based on new genetic
material. It is the first genetic dwarf type of
grandiflora petunia on the market. In fact Limbo
is one of the first in our new Plants Perfect
for Packs range. Because Limbo is genetically
dwarf, growth regulators are not necessary to
achieve long shelf life in the pack
This new early flowering, dwarf series combines
huge flowers, 8-12cm with a plant height of
15-20cm. Where all other petunias are stretching,
Limbo refuses to stretch. It will not get leggy
in the garden but it will develop and keep
its nice round shape and branching plant habit
throughout the entire season. The uniqueness of
this concept and its outstanding garden
performance make a great impact and has resulted
in Limbo Violet being rewarded the All American
Selections Award and the Flueroselect Quality
Award. Time and money consuming treatments with
growth regulators like Alar or Bonzi will become
history while using Petunia Limbo.

rambling plant habit, growing only 20-25cm tall,
but spreading or trailing to 75cm. They will
flower 2 weeks earlier than competitive lines and
are more compact and easier to maintain on the
bench. Ramblin petunias are easy to finish in
colour in 10cm pots and wont take over the
bench! These petunias are very showy in large
garden beds, hanging baskets and mixed
containers. Garden height 20-25cm.

Vesta
Every once in a while a breeder has a
breakthrough. In Verbena Vesta, Sakata Seeds of
Japan has developed a series that is both grower
and consumer friendly, thus filling one of
Highsuns goals when selecting varieties.
Vestas horizontal branching habit suits pack
production with early flowering beating Obsession
and Quartz by 5-7 days. Trials at Highsun last
spring saw very even flowering with plants
filling the packs with a tight canopy. After the
trials plants were planted out in the field where
they continued to exhibit garden vigour but still
maintained a dense canopy of flowers. Burgundy in
particular just didnt stop flowering. By the end
of the trials all varieties were of similar
height.
