As per the reports, unintentional injuries have
caused more than 6 lakh deaths below the age of 5
years to children in India, over 7 of complete
mortality rate. Out of these, falls, mishaps,
fire-related and drowning injuries were reported
the maximum. But, one can easily minimize the
consequences of these fatal accidents by making
your house childproof. Here are some effective
tips that would ensure safety of the toddlers at
your house Furniture The babies get hurt a lot
with the furniture that is present in the house.
Ensure that the furniture that you use in your
house is safe for babies including baby bumpers,
drop-side cribs, and high chairs that are tip
over. For the extra safety of the kids, install
the bumpers at sharp edges of the
furniture. Secure the toilets Make sure that the
doors of the washroom are bolted properly as an
open door which can be dangerous for the curious
child. For the extra safety of the child, you can
keep the commode's lid pretty secure by making
use of the locks. Also, the kid can access the
bathing area and open the taps which can cause
overflow. Thus, maintain limited access of the
kids to the bathrooms. Electronic switches and
appliances Keep the electrical appliances like
toasters, hair dryers, etc. out of the reach of
the tiny tots. Block the electrical switches with
either furniture or safety plugs. Try and hide
all the electrical cords behind the furniture or
make use of the hide-a-cord device as the loose
wires may end up giving an electric shock to the
child.

Cover dustbin
Keep the dustbin in any inaccessible or a
protected cabinet with a child-resistant cover.
Doors and windows Make use of door stoppers and
holders to protect the babies fingers. Safety
nettings and stops/window guards can be easily
installed on the windows for some extra safety.
Also, dont place your furniture close to the
windows that would pretend incidents of the
window falls. Store medicines properly It is
recommended highly that you store the medicines
in a locked cabinet which is not easily
accessible for the kids. Preferably, store
medicine boxes in a drawer which is placed high
above. Also, dont take the medicine out in front
of the kids as they may imitate you in your
absence. Lock properly Put a lock on the cabinets
and drawers that can contain some unsafe items
like household cleaners or other chemicals that
would protect the child. Also, the best way
possible to store these at the height that is
wholly inaccessible to the infants. Install baby
gates Limit the movement of the toddlers by
installing the gates of the baby at the top as
well as the bottom of stairs before the baby
begins crawling. Ensure that the gates are not an
accordion style to avoid any of the
accidents. Maintain cleanliness in the
house Always try to stick to the regular cleaning
schedules of maintaining the household. Check on
the floors for anything that would have dropped
as the toddler in your house might get the catch
infections from the substances on the floor.
Being alert is the primary key to deal with all
such situations. Fire alarm Check all the
batteries of the fire alarm whether they are
working properly. If not, change them at complete
intervals. If you dont have any smoke alarm
system in the home, it is the time to get these
installed. Avoid the areas close to the bathroom
or the kitchen before installing any smoke
detectors as these may prompt false alarms that
would engulf the ignorance towards all these
alarms. Use safe paints in nursery Ensure that
the paint that you choose the personal space of
the child which must have no or low Volatile
Organic Compounds (VOCs) as they can cause some
short or longterm health problems such as throat
or nose irritation, dizziness, headaches and even
kidney or liver damage. You can also choose from
milk-based paints as these are completely VOC
free and environment-friendly. These easy hacks
would make your house comfortable and convenient
for your toddler to roam around and spread
happiness in the house.
