- In the first half of 2016, the government
introduced a three percentage point tax rise on
cigarettes as part of a national effort to curb
smoking and to deter potential new smokers from
picking up the habit. - The price of cigarettes increased by THB5-10 per
pack on average, causing a shock to consumers
especially those in the low-income segment. - The price rise resulted in an immediate decline
in sales of cigarettes by as much as 15.
3- The timely launch of a new economy brand of
cigarettes, Line 7.1, by Thailand Tobacco
Monopoly also gave low-income consumers a more
affordable option. - In fact, the tax rise had little impact on annual
demand for cigarettes. - In 2016, retail volume sales of cigarettes only
saw a negligible decline, to reach 46.3 billion
sticks, whilst retail current value sales
increased by 20 to reach THB168.1 billion.
