The Solar System
  • CS255 PowerPoint Presentation
  • Stacy Stefaniak

2
Introduction
  • The Solar System is the sun and everything that
    orbits around it.
  • The Solar System is made up of the 9 planets, the
    sun, comets, and meteors.
  • The planets are separated into two groups The
Inner Planets and The Outer Planets based on how
close they are to the sun.

3
The Solar System
4
The Sun
  • The sun is a star. It is the hottest, largest,
and brightest object in our Solar System.
  • The sun is mostly made up of Hydrogen.
  • The sun is the start of our Solar System. It is
very important to life on earth.

5
The 9 Planets
  • The Inner Planets
  • Mercury
  • Venus
  • Earth
  • Mars
  • The Outer Planets
  • Jupiter
  • Saturn
  • Uranus
  • Neptune
  • Pluto

6
Mercury
  • Mercury is bare and rocky.
  • It has many craters and a lot of dust.
  • Mercury is the closest planet to the sun.
  • Mercury is the second smallest planet.
  • It can get up to 784F and as cold as 297F.

7
Venus
  • Venus has thick, yellow clouds made of poisonous
    Sulfuric Acid.
  • Venus is mostly flat with a few mountains.
  • There is very little water on Venus.
  • Venus is the hottest planet. It can get as hot
    as 900F.

8
Earth
  • Earth is the only planet that can have life.
  • 70 of the surface is covered with water.
  • Layers of gas surround the earth to protect life.
  • The earth has one moon.

9
Earths Moon
  • The moon is the second brightest object in the
    Solar System.
  • The moon doesnt have an atmosphere.
  • The moon has highlands and craters.
  • FAQs about the moon
  • Moon Madness

10
Mars
  • Mars is known as the Red Planet.
  • Mars has many channels and craters.
  • People once believed life existed on Mars.
  • It has the largest volcano in the solar system.
    It is called Olympus Mons.
  • Mars has 2 moons.

11
Jupiter
  • Jupiter is the largest planet.
  • It is a ball of liquid, not solid like the first
    4 planets.
  • Jupiter has many storms. The biggest one is
called the Great Red Spot. These storms can last
    for years.

12
Jupiters Rings and Moons
  • Jupiter is surrounded by rings.
  • One ring is made up of pebbles, rocks, and
boulders and another is made up of a ring of hot
    gas.
  • Jupiter has 16 moons. The largest is named IO.
    IO has many active volcanoes.

13
Saturn
  • Saturn is composed of gasses.
  • Saturn is the 2nd largest planet in the Solar
    System.
  • Saturn has clouds made up of frozen ammonia
    crystals.
  • The clouds can blow up to 1,000mph.

14
Saturns Rings
  • Saturns rings are over 160 thousand miles
    across.
  • The rings are wide, but they are only 50 miles
    thick.
  • The rings are not solid, they are made up of ice
    balls.

15
Saturns Moons
  • Out of all of the planets, Saturn has the most
moon. It has 20. Scientists think it may have
    more.
  • Titan is the most interesting moon. It has a
thick atmosphere and scientists think it may have
    water on its surface.

16
Uranus
  • Uranus was discovered in 1781.
  • Uranus is 4 times bigger than the earth.
  • Uranus is made up of gasses.
  • Uranus orbits the sun on its side. Why?
Scientists believe it was hit by an object and
    tilted.

17
Uranus Rings and Moons
  • The rings of Uranus werent discovered until
    1977!
  • There are 13 rings and they are chunks of an
    unknown black material.
  • Uranus has 15 moons.
  • On the moon Miranda, there are 3 mile high cliffs
    of ice.

18
Neptune
  • Neptune was discovered in 1846.
  • Until then, many scientists thought it was a
    star.
  • Strong, icy winds cover the planet in the form of
    storms.
  • Neptune is made up of liquid Methane gas.

19
Neptunes Rings and Moons
  • Neptune has 8 moons.
  • Triton is the biggest moon.
  • Triton is colder than any other object in the
Solar System. It has a temperature of 391F.
  • It also has ice volcanoes that shoot Nitrogen ice
    and gas.
  • Neptune has 2 rings, however there may be 5.
  • They are made up of tiny frozen pieces of
    materials.

20
Pluto
  • Pluto is thought to be the last planet in the
    Solar System.
  • We cannot get a clear view of Pluto because it is
    so far away.
  • Pluto was discovered in 1930.
  • Pluto has one moon, Charon. Charon is almost the
    same size as Pluto.

21
Asteroids
  • Asteroids are mini planets. They are chunks of
rocks and metals that circle the sun.
  • The asteroids located between Jupiter and Mars
    are called the Asteroid Belt.

22
Meteors
  • When pieces of asteroids break off, they become
    meteors.
  • They streak through the sky toward earth.
  • When the pieces hit the earth, they are called
    meteorites.

23
Comets
  • Comets are patches of light that appear in the
    sky.
  • Comets are balls of dirt that circle the sun.
  • One of the main sources for comets is the Oort
    Cloud.
  • The Oort cloud surrounds the entire Solar System!
