Title: The Used Car Market to Buy or Not to Buy

1
THE USED CAR MARKET TO BUY OR NOT TO BUY
2
INTRODUCTION
Many people purchase a used car rather than a
brand new one as it can be a good way of keeping
the cost down. Others are more reluctant to buy a
previously owned vehicle, especially through an
independent private seller. Whatever your view,
the following pages will allow you to make a more
fully informed decision when it comes to buying a
second hand vehicle...
3
Used car trades dominate the automobile market
It might surprise you to know that despite all
the adverts you may see for brand new vehicles,
it is the used car trade that dominates the
market. The used car market is approximately 3
times bigger than the market for brand new ones.
4
CPO CARS (CERTIFIED PRE-OWNED CARS)
CPO cars stand out from regular used cars in that
they are inspected, refurbished, and certified by
a registered authority before sale. Like a
manufacturer's warranty, a detailed inspection
can provide peace of mind when it comes to making
such an important purchase. Naturally, CPO cars
sell very well.
5
An average used car goes through 3 owners
Most cars change hands more than once in their
lifetime. On average, a car will go through 3
owners. If you can, try to get the maintenance
records of all the previous owners.
6
Used fleet cars usually encounter more accidents
Used fleet cars, vehicles that were once owned by
businesses and organisations, tend to have a
greater accident history than privately owned
cars (simply because they are used so
frequently). It's worth bearing this in mind when
considering a used car that was once a taxi cab,
an emergency vehicle, or a rental car. It you
decide to purchase a used fleet car, it's worth
opting for a thorough inspection of the vehicle.
7
ODOMETER FRAUD
Analog odometers can be manipulated easily by
rogue sellers and dealers, turning back the
reading to make the mileage look lower. Odometers
these days tend to be digital, but fraud is still
prevalent. Beware of odometer discrepancies when
purchasing a used car.
8
THIRD PARTY EXTENDED WARRANTIES
Some used car dealers may offer extended
warranties with the vehicle, and the offer can
sound attractive, but do be wary. Not all such
warranties offer the kind of protection you may
assume they do - read the small print before
agreeing to a sale.

NEW TO YOU
If you consider all of these points it's likely
you'll be very happy with your purchase the car
you buy may be used, but it is still new to
you! If you to put your own 'mark' on the
vehicle, perhaps consider adding a personalised
number plate. Visit plates4less.co.uk for an
extensive range of available registrations marks.
