Clara Barton

• Was Born December 25 1821 and Died April 12
  1912
• Best remembered for organizing the American Red
  Cross
• Was first apart of the ICRC- International
  Committee of the Red Cross for war victims while
  overseas
• Later Clara came to the U.S. to form the
  American Red Cross for victims other than war
  victims

Jane Delano

• Was born March 13 1862 and died April 15 1919
• Started treating patients with typhoid and yellow
  fever
• Was a nurse and founder of the American Red Cross
  Nursing Services

Commodore Wilbert Longfellow

• Became interested in safety features and saving
  lives
• Presented the waterproofing of America to the
  American Red Cross in 1912
• Became nation-wide in 1914
• Awarded the American Red Cross Lifesaving
  Certificate Number One
• Through his leadership men and women at beaches
  and pools with the Red Cross Logo began to appear
  on lifeguards

• Was the First Lady of U.S. from 1963-1969
• Served as chairman of the Senate Wives Red Cross
  Unit for more than a decade
• Was presented an American Red Cross certificate

• Born June 3 1904 and died on April 1 1950
• He was an African- American specialist surgeon
  educator and scientist
• Dr. Drew also established the American Red Cross
  blood bank of which he was the first director
  and he organized the worlds first blood bank
  drive
• nicknamed Blood for Britain
• American Red Cross blood program is due to the
  result of Dr. Drew

William Howard Taft

• (September 15 1857 March 8 1930) was the 27th
  President of the United States
• He served as President of the Red Cross Board of
  Incorporators following the congressional
  reorganization of the Red Cross in 1905 and later
  as Red Cross President
• Continuing to this day that the U.S. President
  serves as honorary leader of the Red Cross

Mabel Boardman

• 1905- Became the new American Red Cross Leader
  for the next four decades
• The Red Cross was to become a force in public
  health nursing in dietetics and a leader in
  life-saving and first aid training
• Mabel Boardman took a special interest in the
  formation and direction of Red Cross Home
  Service the Nurses Aide Corps the Motor Corps
  and the famed Gray Ladies
• When offered the organizations highest executive
  position she refused it

Frances Reed Elliott

• (1892-1965)
• She was born in Knoxville Tennessee to her
  mother who was a plantation heiress and her
  father an African American farm worker. Orphaned
  at the age of six she spent her early life in
  foster homes
• In 1913- Elliott demanded a chance to write the
  other test and became the first African American
  in the district to write and pass the exam
  administered by the District of Columbia
• July 2 1918- Elliott became the first African
  American accepted into the American Red Cross
  Nursing Service
