• 1610- assassinated and his son Louis (age 9)

Louis XIII 1610-1643

• 1624- appoints Cardinal Richelieu as chief
  minister
• 1624-1642- Richelieu controls France
• Strengthens the central government and wants to
  make France the strongest nation in Europe
• Destroys the power of the Huguenots and the
  French nobles
• Fought against the Spanish and the Austrian
  Hapsburgs
• 1642- Richelieu died and replaced by Cardinal
  Mazarin

Louis XIV 1643-1715

• 1643-1661- Mazarin running the country because
  Louis XIV is only 5 when he became the king
• 1661- at the age of 23 Louis XIV took control
• Believed in Divine Right
• Known as the Sun King

• Jean Baptiste Colbert- practiced Mercantilism and
  made France the wealthiest nation in Europe
• Built the Palace of Versailles
• Replaced Italy as the center of European culture
