2
5 major types of volcanoes
  • Composite volcanoes (also called strato
    volcanoes)
  • Shield volcanoes
  • Cinder cones
  • Spatter cones
  • Complex volcanoes

3
Structure of a Volcano
4
Hawaiian Shield Volcano
  • Shield volcanoes are composed mainly of
basaltlava that is very fluid. The shield
volcanoes arent very steep because the fluid
runs down the slopes too easily. A shield volcano
is built almost entirely of fluid lava flows.
Some of the largest volcanoes in the world are
    shield volcanoes.

5
5 volcanoes that make up Hawaii(the big island)
  • Mauna Kea
  • Hualalai
  • Mauna Loa (worlds largest active volcano)
  • Kilauea (active volcano)
  • Kohala

6
Volcanic Eruption
  • Beneath the earths surface the temperature
becomes so hot it melts the rock. Magma forms,
rises, and collects in magma chambers. As magma
    rises, pressure decreases, gases expand.
Expansion shoots the magma through the opening,
causing what is called a volcanic eruption.

7
How hot does lava get?
  • Lava gets up to 2200 degrees Fahrenheit
  • It quickly develops a skin of cooler lava
    approximately 800 degrees Centigrade

8
  • Total area covered by eruption from Kilauea is
  • Current eruption covers 35 sq. miles
  • Past eruptions cover 550 sq. miles
  • Kilauea is a growing volcano that has been
erupting since 1983 and shows no sign of
stopping. During this period, the coastline has
formed about 2 sq. miles of new land.
