2Something to think about
- Census projections are that by 2030, one in five
Americans will be over 65 years of age. - Older adults will account for
- 60 of the patients on hospital units
- 80 of the home care visits
- 85 of the nursing home residents
- Geriatric nursing is under represented in all
levels of nursing practice and nursing education.
3GRN Education Grant Purpose is to advance
knowledge
- The goal of this educational grant is to
- Prepare core groups of RNs to serve as experts
in best geriatric practices. - Prepare them to teach and coach other health care
providers to care for older adults.
4Who is Eligible to Participate?
- Unit Managers
- Staff Educators
- Staff RNs
- RNs working in
- acute care hospitals
- long term acute care hospitals
- home health agencies
- hospice organizations that provide care for older
adults.
5The GRN Educational Program Description
- Each RN will participate in the study for 6
months and receive 40 CEUs. - The GRN program includes 4 day-long sessions that
meet during months 1, 2, 3, 6. - Content on geriatric basics and best practices
are presented in the workshops. - There is NO COST to RNs or to their employers to
participate in this Educational Program.

- Dementia / Delirium
- Malnutrition / Dehydration
- Ulcer Prevention
- Poly-pharmacy

- Workshops will include
- Communication and Conflict Resolution
- Mentoring and Coaching Skills
- Interdisciplinary Team Training
- Cultural Competent Caregiving

- This web site will be linked to the University of
Texas School of Nursing at Houston, Center on
Aging Department. - The website will have educational materials that
the GRN can use for staff CEUs. - Instruction on use of web-based resources and
developing effective presentation skills.
9The Clinical / Academic Project (CAP)is designed
to transition education into practice
- The CAP will be developed and conducted in the
institution of the RNs service area.
- The CAP can be a quality improvement project or
the demonstration of best geriatric practice for
a specific problem.
- RNS will work with their academic and clinical
mentor to implement their CAP.
- The CAP takes 2 months and is done during months
4 5 of the grant.
- The goal of the CAP is to improve access to
quality care for older adults.

11Geriatric Resource Nurse Councils
- To provide support for GRN participants as they
extend their geriatric education into practice. - The councils will meet quarterly to provide the
GRN with continuing education, support, and
networking. - The council members will review continuing
education materials developed for use by the GRN
in education of other health care providers.
