Progression of egg development (oogenesis) in
Xenopus is arrested in meiosis I by MPF.
Progesterone (a steroid hormone) relieves the
block, by stimulating the translation of a
masked (inactive) Mos mRNA. Mos acts as a
MAPKKK, initiating the MAPK module. A relative
of the Wee1 kinase found in fission yeast, Myt1
is the node connecting MAPK to MPF activation.
This pathway is an example of Lee Hartwells
concept of the tailoring of plug-and-play
modules during evolution.
