Title: The problem

1
The problem
  • Churches today are in trouble
  • a. Mainly because of unqualified leadership
  • 1.Churches need leaders and so in haste
place people in positions to fill the slot.
  • 2. This is a time proven recipe for failure.
  • 3. Church offices are not honorary positions
  • given to those
  • - faithful in church attendance,
    -seniority in years,

2
  • Nor are they to be filled by good friends
  • Rich donors
  • Charismatic personalities
  • Seminary graduates
  • Instead they are open to all who meet the
biblical standards outlined very specifically in
    scripture.

3
1Tim 3 A call to qualified leadership
  • 31 This saying is trustworthy
  • If someone aspires to the office of
overseer, he desires a good work.
  • 32 The overseer then must be
    1. above reproach, (1Pet 315,16)
  • 2. the husband of one wife, (o,w,m) 3.
    temperate, self-controlled, 4. respectable,
    hospitable, an able teacher,

4
  • 33 5. not a drunkard,
    6. not violent, but gentle,
    7. not contentious,
    8. free from the love of money.(1Tim 610)
  • 34 9. He must manage his own household
well and keep his children in control
without losing his dignity. 35 But if
someone does not know how to manage his
own household, how will he care for the
    church of God?

5
1 Prov 2329 Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who
has contentions? Who has complaints? Who has
wounds without cause? Who has dullness of the
eyes? 2330 Those who linger over wine, those who
go looking for mixed wine. 2331 Do not look on
the wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the
cup, when it goes down smoothly. 2332 Afterward
it bites like a snake, and stings like a
viper. 2333 Your eyes will see strange
things, and your mind will speak perverse
things. 2334 And you will be like one who lies
down in the midst of the sea, and like one who
lies down on the top of the rigging. 2335 You
will say, They have struck me, but I am not
harmed! They beat me, but I did not know it! When
will I awake? I will look for another drink.
  • 33 5. not a drunkard,
    6. not violent, but gentle,
    7. not contentious,
    8. free from the love of money.(1Tim 610)
  • 34 9. He must manage his own household
well and keep his children in control
without losing his dignity. 35 But if
someone does not know how to manage his
own household, how will he care for the
    church of God?

6
  • 33 5. not a drunkard,
    6. not violent, but gentle,
    7. not contentious,
    8. free from the love of money.(1Tim 610)
  • 34 9. He must manage his own household
well and keep his children in control
without losing his dignity. 35 But if
someone does not know how to manage his
own household, how will he care for the
    church of God?

Eph 431 You must put away every kind of
bitterness, anger, wrath, quarreling, and evil,
slanderous talk. 432 Instead, be kind to one
another, compassionate, forgiving one another,
just as God in Christ also forgave you.
7
  • 33 5. not a drunkard,
    6. not violent, but gentle,
    7. not contentious,
    8. free from the love of money.(1Tim 610)
  • 34 9. He must manage his own household
well and keep his children in control
without losing his dignity. 35 But if
someone does not know how to manage his
own household, how will he care for the
    church of God?

a fighter, bad tempered, irritable, out of
control individual. It can mean verbal or
physical.
8
  • 33 5. not a drunkard,
    6. not violent, but gentle,
    7. not contentious,
    8. free from the love of money.(1Tim 610)
  • 34 9. He must manage his own household
well and keep his children in control
without losing his dignity. 35 But if
someone does not know how to manage his
own household, how will he care for the
    church of God?

2 Tim 223 But reject foolish and ignorant
controversies, because you know they breed
infighting. 224 And the Lords slave must not
engage in heated disputes but be kind toward all,
an apt teacher, patient, 225 correcting
opponents with gentleness. Perhaps God will grant
them repentance and then knowledge of the truth
9
  • 33 5. not a drunkard,
    6. not violent, but gentle,
    7. not contentious,
    8. free from the love of money.(1Tim 610)
  • 34 9. He must manage his own household
well and keep his children in control
without losing his dignity. 35 But if
someone does not know how to manage his
own household, how will he care for the
    church of God?

1Tim 66 Now godliness combined with contentment
brings great profit. 67 For we have brought
nothing into this world and so we cannot take a
single thing out either. 68 But if we have food
and shelter, we will be satisfied with that. 69
Those who long to be rich, however, stumble into
temptation and a trap and many senseless and
harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and
destruction. 610 For the love of money is the
root of all evils. Some people in reaching for it
have strayed from the faith and stabbed
themselves with many pains. 611 But you, as a
person dedicated to God, keep away from all that.
Instead pursue righteousness, godliness,
faithfulness, love, endurance, and gentleness.
10
  • 33 5. not a drunkard,
    6. not violent, but gentle,
    7. not contentious,
    8. free from the love of money.(1Tim 610)
  • 34 9. He must manage his own household
well and keep his children in control
without losing his dignity. 35 But if
someone does not know how to manage his
own household, how will he care for the
    church of God?

Prov 308 Remove falsehood and lies far from me
do not give me poverty or riches, feed me with my
allotted portion of bread, 309 lest I become
satisfied and act deceptively and say, Who is
the Lord?Or lest I become poor and steal and
demean the name of my God.
11
keep his children in control without losing his
dignity, may refer to the children rather than
the parent having children who are obedient and
respectful.
  • 33 5. not a drunkard,
    6. not violent, but gentle,
    7. not contentious,
    8. free from the love of money.(1Tim 610)
  • 34 9. He must manage his own household
well and keep his children in control
without losing his dignity. 35 But if

  • 36 10. He must not be a recent convert or he
may become arrogant and fall into the
punishment that the devil will exact.
  • 37 11. And he must be well thought of by those
outside the faith, so that he may not
fall into disgrace and be caught by the
    devils trap.
  • 38 Deacons likewise
  • 1. must be dignified, not two-faced,
    2. not given to excessive drinking, not
    greedy for gain,
  • 39 3. holding to the mystery of the faith with
    a clear conscience.

Isa 1412 Look how you have fallen from the sky,
O Lucifer, son of the dawn! You have been cut
down to the ground, O conqueror of the nations!
1413 You said to yourself, I will climb up to
the sky. Above the stars of God I will set up my
throne. I will rule on the mountain of assembly
on the remote slopes of Zaphon. 1414 I will
climb up to the tops of the clouds I will make
myself like the Most High!1415 But you were
brought down to Sheol, to the remote slopes of
the pit.
13
  • 36 10. He must not be a recent convert or he
may become arrogant and fall into
the punishment that the devil will
    exact.
  • 37 11. And he must be well thought of by those
outside the faith, so that he may
not fall into disgrace and be caught by
    the devils trap.
  • 38 Deacons likewise
  • 1. must be dignified, not two-faced,
  • 2. not given to excessive drinking, not
    greedy for gain,
  • 39 3. holding to the mystery of the faith with
    a clear conscience.

1 Pet 5 Likewise, you younger men, be subject to
the elders. And all of you clothe yourselves with
humility toward one another, because God resists
the proud, but gives grace to the humble. 6
Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand
of God, so that He may exalt you in due time,
14
  • 36 10. He must not be a recent convert or he
may become arrogant and fall into
the punishment that the devil will
    exact.
  • 37 11. And he must be well thought of by
those outside the faith, so that he may
not fall into disgrace and be caught by
    the devils trap.
  • 38 Deacons likewise
  • 1. must be dignified, not two-faced,
  • 2. not given to excessive drinking, not
    greedy for gain,
  • 39 3. holding to the mystery of the faith with
    a clear conscience.

1Pet 314 But in fact, if you happen to suffer
for doing what is right, you are blessed. But do
not be terrified of them or be shaken. 315 But
set Christ apart as Lord in your hearts and
always be ready to give an answer to anyone who
asks about the hope you possess. 316 Yet do it
with courtesy and respect, keeping a good
conscience, so that those who slander your good
conduct in Christ may be put to shame when they
accuse you. 317 For it is better to suffer for
doing good, if God wills it, than for doing evil.
15
41 So, since Christ suffered in the flesh, you
also arm yourselves with the same attitude,
because the one who has suffered in the flesh has
finished with sin, 42 in that he spends the rest
of his time on earth concerned about the will of
God and not human desires. 43 For the time that
has passed was sufficient for you to do what the
non-Christians desire. You lived then in
debauchery, evil desires, drunkenness, carousing,
drinking bouts, and wanton idolatries.
  • 36 10. He must not be a recent convert or he
may become arrogant and fall into
the punishment that the devil will
    exact.
  • 37 11. And he must be well thought of by
those outside the faith, so that he may
not fall into disgrace and be caught by
    the devils trap.
  • 38 Deacons likewise
  • 1. must be dignified, not two-faced,
  • 2. not given to excessive drinking, not
    greedy for gain,

  • 39 3. holding to the mystery of the faith

2 Tim 31 But understand this, that in the last
days difficult times will come. 32 For people
will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money,
boastful, arrogant, blasphemers, disobedient to
parents, ungrateful, unholy, 33 unloving,
irreconcilable, slanderers, without self-control,
savage, opposed to what is good, 34 treacherous,
reckless, conceited, loving pleasure rather than
loving God.

common NT idiom for ones lifestyle, behavior, or

Col 45 Conduct yourselves with wisdom toward

with salt, so that you may know how you should
answer everyone.

1Peter211 Dear friends, I urge you as foreigners
and exiles to keep away from fleshly desires that
do battle against the soul, 212 and maintain
good conduct among the non-Christians, so that
though they now malign you as wrongdoers, they
may see your good deeds and glorify God when he
appears.

Acts 63 But carefully select from among you,
brothers, seven men who are well-attested, full
of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may put in
charge of this necessary task.
This is probably due to the confidential nature
of needs in the body. Sometimes they are things
that not everyone needs to know

  • 310 4. And these also must be tested first

  • and then let them serve as deacons

23
  • 311 5. Likewise also their wives must be
    a. dignified, not slanderous,
    b. temperate, faithful in every respect.
  • 312 6. Deacons must be husbands of one
wife and good managers of their
    children and their own households.

Titus 23 Older women likewise are to exhibit
behavior fitting for those who are holy, not
slandering, not slaves to excessive drinking, but
teaching what is good. 24 In this way they will
train the younger women to love their husbands,
to love their children, 25 to be
self-controlled, pure, fulfilling their duties at
home, kind, being subject to their own husbands,
so that the message of God may not be
discredited.
24
  • 311 5. Likewise also their wives must be
    a. dignified, not slanderous,
    b. temperate, faithful in every respect.
  • 312 6. Deacons must be husbands of one

    children and their own households.
  • 313 For those who have served well as
  • deacons gain a good standing for themselves
and great boldness in the faith

  • 313 For those who have served well as deacons
gain a good standing for themselves and great
boldness in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.

Mat 2025 But Jesus called them and said, You
know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over
them, and those in high positions use their
authority over them. 2026 It must not be this
way among you! Instead whoever wants to be great
among you must be your servant, 2027 and whoever
wants to be first among you must be your slave
2028 just as the Son of Man did not come to be
served but to serve, and to give his life as a
ransom for many.
26
  • 314 I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing
    these instructions to you
  • 315 in case I am delayed, to let you know how
people ought to conduct themselves in the
    household of God,
  • 1. because it is the church of the
  • living God,
  • 2. the support and bulwark of the
  • truth.

27
  • 316 And we all agree, our religion contains
    amazing revelation
  • He was revealed in the flesh, vindicated by the
    Spirit,
  • seen by angels, proclaimed among Gentiles,
  • believed on in the world, taken up in glory.
