Antonio Vendramin
My name is Antonio Vendramin and I have been
teaching in the Surrey School District for 11
years. This year, I am teaching grade seven at
Frost Road Elementary. I enjoy the challenge of
integrating technology into student learning in
interesting and meaningful ways, particularly
with applications such as iMovie, Inspiration,
Powerpoint, and FirstClass. I have been involved
in the TLITE program as both a participant in
Abbotsford and a mentor in Surrey. I am
currently part of the Surrey's FirstClass Working
and Training Group. Our goal is widespread and
effective use of FirstClass among both teachers
and students in the district. My personal
interests include spending time with my wife and
three children, hiking, camping, gardening, and
home improvement.

Brad Helland
  • I have been an intermediate teacher in Surrey
    for 6 years. Since my first position as a
    Computer Prep teacher, I have gained a wealth of
    knowledge, skills and experience in technology
    and its application in Teaching and Learning. I
    have set-up a new school's network "from the box
    up", including the switches, hubs and related
    clients. Since its district inauguration in the
    year 2000, FirstClass has streamlined my work in
    my role as teacher and learner in the Surrey
    School District. I am now happy to enable my
    students to gain some of this experience as well.
    We are currently exploring online literature
    response sharing. Over the past few years, I
    have also learned about digital video and have
    created three year-end video/still slideshows
    which are an annual hit. I recently completed a
    Masters program in Leadership and Training from
    Royal Roads University and am now very interested
    in the different perspectives on mentorship.
    This is my first year with a student teacher, and
    I'm looking forward to growth in our respective
    roles.

Diane Akey
  • Presently, I am teaching a grade 3 class at
    Coast Meridian Elementary in Surrey. I work hard
    to present my classroom content in active
    learning styles. A professional goal of mine is
    to integrate the Fine Arts and Information
    Technology in to my primary classroom. I am the
    mother of a 25 year old autistic son. My Learning
    Path through out my career, has followed him. My
    educational studies have been in Special
    Education, Fine Arts, Computer Studies, and
    Curriculum Development. I enjoy creating
    multimedia, gardening,building on Mayne
    Island,walking my dogs, reading, and sharing time
    with my family and friends.

Susan Whyte
  • I have had the opportunity to teach and learn
    with primary, intermediate and adult students.
    In each case, I have used technology to enhance
    the process. I presently teach grade 6 at George
    Greenaway Elementary, support the staff with
    their technological journeys, and mentor for
    SFUs TLITE (Teaching and Learning in an
    Information Technology Environment) Program. The
    students and I have worked with a variety of
    programs such as KidPix, HyperStudio, AppleWorks,
    iMovie, and FirstClass. I enjoy encouraging the
    staff and students to take risks and have fun
    with technology. In my spare time, I attempt
    Pilates, skiing and spending time with family
    and friends.

Ken White
  • I've been an intermediate teacher in Surrey for
    over ten years and along the way, I have gained a
    broad range of technological experience and
    skills. I have a good understanding of the
    devices that keep our school technology working
    including servers, switches, hubs, wireless
    networking, and printers. My students help to
    make presentations for our school assemblies, so
    we make regular use of digital photography,
    digital video, scanners, iMovie, and iPhoto.
    I've been involved with SFU's TLITE program and
    with distance learning at Royal Roads University.
    My experiences with these programs have
    encouraged me to explore the use of FirstClass
    with students as a means of improving their
    learning.

Carrie Gabriele
I currently teach grade 6 at Berkshire Park
Elementary. In prior positions, I have taught
grade 7 and Intermediate Prep - French (which I
know very little of) and Computers. Computers was
something I knew something about, having spent
many hours trying to be at least as smart as my
son. I quickly abandoned that dream when I walked
into a lab full of iMacs and realized I had to
learn how to use and maintain the "pretty"
computers. As IT contact, I have learned to
troubleshoot both PC and Mac computer systems. As
well, I've helped set up servers in Mac labs with
Mac Manager, Network Assistant, and Multi-users.
I firmly believe that computer-assisted learning
can be of great benefit to our students. My
classes are often in the computer lab working on
projects that they enjoy and that meet the
learning outcomes. Over the years, I've created
many units integrating technology with classroom
units in Math, Socials, Science, Personal
Planning, and Language Arts. FirstClass has been
a wonderful addition to my students' learning.
They quickly learn to use this tool to maximize
their learning and look forward to posting their
work, questions, and responses to others online.
We have used FirstClass for projects in all
subject areas with very few minor problems.

Jeff May
For the past seven of my 19 years delivering
face-to-face science instruction, Ive integrated
information and communication technologies (ICTs)
into the curriculum. This experience coupled with
an understanding of distance education theory and
skills in the areas of content review, sequencing
of instruction, web page design, media selection,
and overall program evaluation, serves me well in
my new position at Surrey School District's
online school Surrey Connect. I embraced
FirstClass as soon as the District made it
available to teachers. My webpage is

Colleen White
I have taught in Surrey for over twenty
years, most of it part time until the last four
years. My interest in technology began at Halls
Prairie Elementary School in the early nineties.
We had a lab of Mac Classics! When I moved from
there to Chantrell Creek Elementary, I worked
with Garry Weltzin who taught me a tremendous
amount about computers and technology. Since I
moved to Chimney Hill in September 2001, I have
been the technology contact person, and one of
the facilitators of the school. The learning
curve has been phenomenal! We presently have a
lab of iMacs which are connected to a server, an
L.S.T. iMac connected to the server, 27 iBooks
which are mostly stand alone, and a few other
S.E.T. B.C. computers in the school. We also have
a digital still camera, a digital video camera,
and a projection unit for use with computers and
video machines. We have received district grants
and support from our P.A.C. to help us develop a
strong base in technology. We even won a laptop
at a district "end of year presentation!" All of
our grade six and seven students have First Class
accounts, and the grade five's who are in the 5/6
class also have access. This pilot project has
been very exciting to be involved in! Our
students love the e-mail access, and we are
finding the accounts extremely valuable to have.
We are discovering many ways they can help our
students improve their learning and
achievement. I have attended many workshops, and
days of inservice, related to integrating
technology into the curriculum, and am passionate
about it. I have become involved at the district
level this school year. I look forward to
supporting other teachers and staff members
become more comfortable with technology, and
develop new ways to integrate it into the
curriculum. I believe it is absolutely necessary
that our children develop a high comfort level in
using all types of technology, and that they
become life long learners in the area of
technology, as well as all other aspects of their
lives.

Anissa Kermode
  • Anissa is a Planning 10 teacher at Lord
    Tweedsmuir and works as an ICT trainer for
    Graduation Portfolios. She is involved with the
    dance team and is a department head.

Denni Anderson
  • My name is Denni Anderson and I currently teach
    grade six at Hyland Elementary. This is my ninth
    year of teaching in Surrey, concentrating on the
    intermediate grades including 4 years in Special
    Education. I have also taught at Cedar Hills and
    Hjorth Road.
  • I was a member of the first graduating class of
    the Teaching Learning in an Information
    Technology Environment (TLITE) program with SFU.
    While in the program, my main focus of study was
    using First Class with teachers. For the past two
    years my students have also reaped the benefits
    of using First Class.

Nicole Painchaud
  • Nicole Painchaud has been teaching in Secondary
    and elementary schools for the past 20 years, 8
    of which have been in Surrey School District.
    Nicole has always been a part of technology. She
    has been a computer facilitator at both
    elementary and secondary schools. She has
    implemented technology in the classrooms at both
    the elementary and secondary schools. she has
    mentors teachers at both levels and was a mentor
    in the TLite program for two years.
  • Nicole was part of the beginning of online
    courses at Surrey district, helping Open Schools
    with the technical questions and facilitating the
    online programs in Surrey School District. She
    went around to different schools and to different
    school districts, training others on how to use
    WebCT and how to create an online course. She
    partnered with other teachers to create two
    online courses now being used by the district and
    the province Business Education 9/10 and
    Entrepreneurship 11/12. This lead Nicole to her
    Masters of ARts Degree in Distance Learning, a
    program she completed in not two years, but in
    one Calendar year. She was second in her class
    and has been part of other district's committees
    in discussions regarding online learning.
  • Nicole has worked for the past two years with
    IMS in both the CMS school set up, as well as in
    creating online training courses for both
    students and teachers in the district. The
    training websites are both user friendly, and
    educational.
  • Presently, Ms. Painchaud is setting up the
    Planning 10 11 program at North Surrey
    Secondary. She is also helping to train staff
    all about Planning and the Graduate Portfolio,
    the aspects, correcting them and implementing
    aspects inside and outside of the classroom.
