2
The VCE (and VCAL)
  • In Year 11, all students study the equivalent of
six subjects (12 units) per year
  • In Year 12, all students study the equivalent of
five subjects (10 units) per year
  • Any variations to this must be approved by the
    Principal.

3
Equivalent VCE Subjects
  • The six subjects can be made up of
  • VCE Subjects
  • VCAL Subjects
  • VET Certificates
  • School Based New Apprenticeships
  • Pre-apprenticeships (SW TAFE)

4
VET / SBNA
  • VET Vocational Education and Training
  • Some VET Certificates are run at Mortlake
College but the majority of VET Certificates are
run at South West TAFE on Thursday afternoon.
  • SBNA School Based New Apprenticeship
  • You can do a SBNA in many different industry
areas. Students try and match their work day
with the day that causes the least disruption to
    their school studies.

5
  • AUSTRALIAN TRAINING COLLEGE WARRNAMBOOL (ATCW)
  • Commences in 2007
  • Most weeks students spend
  • Three days at Mortlake College
  • One day on the job with an employer as part of
    a SBNA
  • One day at the ATCW (Brauer)

6
  • BACK TO THE VCE
  • Year 11 level subjects - Units 1 and 2
  • Year 12 level subjects - Units 3 and 4
  • Year 11 students can attempt one Year 12 subject

7
  • To get your VCE Certificate, you must
    satisfactorily complete
  • The equivalent of 16 units of study
  • Three Year 12 subjects (both Units 3 4) other
    than English.
  • Three units of English and/or Literature
  • At least one of these units must be at the 3/4
    (Year 12) level.

8
  • Units of Work
  • A unit of work is typically
  • Half a year (commonly called a semester)
  • 100 hours of work which is roughly
  • 60 hours in the classroom
  • up to 40 hours out of the classroom

9
  • At the end of every unit
  • Students will be given either an S or N.
  • S Satisfactorily completed the unit.
  • N Not Satisfactorily completed the unit.

10
  • To get an S, you must satisfactorily complete ALL
of the Outcomes of that unit.
  • Outcomes define what students will know and be
able to do as a result of undertaking the unit of
    work.
  • If you do not satisfactorily complete ALL of the
Outcomes, you are automatically given an N for
    that unit.

11
  • Assessment and Reporting
  • Year 11 and 12
  • There is an end of unit report
  • Progress checks are made at least three times
during each unit. If the student is in danger of
gaining an N in any unit they are counseled
    and parents are notified.

12
  • Year 11
  • In each Unit, students will be given
  • Assessment tasks for which they will be given a
letter grade (A to E). These grades will appear
on the end of Unit Reports.
  • There will be Unit 2 exams in November which will
be reported on in the end of Year Reports.
  • These grades are not sent to the V.C.A.A.
  • They are solely part of the Colleges Assessment
    procedure.

13
  • At the end or Year 11
  • Successful VCAL students will receive either the
    VCAL Foundation or Intermediate Certificate.
  • Both VCE and VCAL students will receive an
official statement of results indicating what
    units they have successfully passed.

14
  • Year 12
  • Year 12 level subjects - Units 3 and 4
  • Units 3 and 4 must be taken as a sequence.
  • (The only real exception to this is English)

15
Year 12 Assessment
  • Year 12 Assessment consists of
  • SACs (School Assessed Coursework)
  • SATs (School Assessed Tasks)
  • External Examinations

16
SACs School Assessed Coursework
  • SACs are
  • Performed mainly in class time
  • Within a limited time frame

17
Assessment Components

20
At the end of Year 12
  • Successful VCAL students will receive either the
    VCAL Intermediate or Senior Certificate.
  • Most successful VCE students will receive two
    sets of results.

21
V.C.A.A Results
  • The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority
(V.C.A.A) run the VCE and issue the VCE and VCAL
    Certificates.
  • They also award study scores for each subject
    successfully completed.

22
Study Scores
  • The Study score compares your results to the
results of all other students who passed that
    subject.
  • Study Scores are out of 50
  • Score 50 Top student in the state for that
    subject
  • Score 0 Bottom student in the state for that
subject but you you have stilled passed

23
VTAC Results
  • The Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre assist
    the Tertiary Institutions with selecting
    students.
  • VTAC takes the V.C.A.A study scores and works out
a scaled study score and an ENTER score.

24
VTAC Scaled Study Scores
  • According to V.T.A.C
  • Scaling ensures that each study score contributes
    fairly to the ENTER score.
  • Students can therefore choose studies that they
enjoy or are good at, knowing that they will not
    be disadvantaged by their choice.

25
VTAC Scaled Study Scores
  • For a subject where the competition is hot, study
    scores are scaled up.
  • For a subject where the competition is low, study
    scores are scaled down.

26
Scaling Example 1
  • Maths Methods
  • V.C.A.A V.T.A.C
  • Study Score Scaled Study Score
  • 20 25
  • 30 37

30
Scaled Study Scores
  • Which subjects are scaled up or down and how much
they are scaled varies from year to year
  • Conclusion
  • Do not pick a subject because you think
  • Your study score will be scaled up or
  • It is easier to get a higher study score in that
    subject

31
Pick Subjects
  • You like or are interested in
  • You are good at
  • Check for prerequisites for any tertiary course
    that you are interested in

32
Check for Prerequisites
  • Example Nursing at Latrobe University
  • English 3-4 with a study score of at least 25
  • A study score of at least 20 in one of biology,
    chemistry, mathematics (any), or physics.

33
V.T.A.C ENTER Score
  • Your scaled study scores are then used to
    calculate your aggregate score
  • ADD
  • English Scaled Study Score
  • Next Best Three Scaled Study Scores
  • 10 of any 5th or 6th Scaled Study Scores

34
Aggregate Score for Kim
  • V.C.A.A V.T.A.C
  • Subject Study Scores Scaled Study Score
  • English 45 45
  • Bus. Manag. 50 50
  • Further Maths 48 47
  • Psychology 45 44
  • Legal Studies 50 50
  • Aggregate Score 45 50 50 47 4.4 196.4
  • 196

35
ENTER Score
  • The Equivalent National Tertiary Entrance Rank
(ENTER) is based on your Aggregate Score
  • Maximum ENTER 99.95
  • This is the ENTER score that the 20 students with
    the highest aggregate receive

36
  • Minimum ENTER 0
  • This is the ENTER score that the 20 students with
    the lowest aggregate receive
  • ENTER is not a measure of PASS or FAIL as only
students who successfully complete the VCE get an
    ENTER score
  • The ENTER is an ATTEMPT by VTAC to rank
successful VCE students from highest to lowest

37
ENTER Scores
  • The ENTER score will not open the door to every
    career pathway
  • But generally speaking
  • The Higher the ENTER score
  • The more tertiary career pathways are opened to
    you.

38
Privileges of VCE Students
  • Private Study
  • VCE Room
  • Year 12 are allowed to go down the street at
    lunchtime
  • Access to computers without having to ask
    permission from 830am to 600pm
  • A separate VCE Uniform
  • Treated more as Adults

39
Obligations of VCE Students
  • VCE Students should strive to do their best
  • In their school work
  • In Sports
  • In Work Experience
  • In Extra Curricular Activities
  • (i.e SRC, School Council, Debating, ..)
  • In Personal Qualities such as Leadership,
    Behaviour, Reliability, Honesty, ...

40
  • When you finally depart Mortlake College,we want
you to leave with an achievement folder and a
reference that will impress not only yourself but
also potential employers or tertiary institutions.

41
Homework
  • Expect approximately 10 hours of homework per
    week
  • Make use of your Private Study time (3 hours per
week) as it will reduce the amount of homework to
    be done

42
Vacations
  • Expect Homework over the Holidays
  • Important to read English Texts over the Summer
    Holidays

43
Avoid the Goldfish Syndrome
  • Because Mortlake College is a small school, some
students believe they are doing enough work
because they are doing the same as everyone else
    in the class.
  • Remember, there are over 45,000 students doing
    the VCE.
  • If your teacher/coordinator tells you you need to
    do more, believe them.
  • They are trying to help you.

44
Dons suffer from Ostrich Disease
  • Typical Ostrich Excuses
  • I was away the day the assignment was handed out
so I didnt think I had to do it
  • I was away the day the assignment was due in so
now I dont have to hand it in
  • I was away the day of the test so I dont have
    to do it
  • I failed one Maths test so I didnt bother
handing in the last couple of assignments

45
Best Symptom of Ostrich Disease
  • I thought I handed that Assignment in
  • You cannot expect to achieve your maximum
potential if you consistently miss classes.
  • Students who are absent for more than 30 of
class time can automatically get an N for that
unit unless the absences are approved by the
    Principal.

46
Final Issues
  • Year 11 Camp and Work Experience
