1
LANDER UNIVERSITY
  • Welcome to the Department of Physical Sciences!

2
MISSION STATEMENT
  • Our first and most important mission is to
provide excellent teaching through courses that
are designed to support the various programs
    offered within the division.
  • Our second mission is to provide a variety of
    quality undergraduate research experiences that
enhance the development of students as scientists
and that prepare them for post-graduate careers.

3
DEGREE PROGRAMSIN PHYSICAL SCIENCES
  • B. S. in Chemistry
  • B. S. in Environmental Science
  • Chemistry/Engineering Dual Degree

4
CHEMISTRY
  • The study of chemistry involves many objects that
we encounter everyday plastic bags, antacid
tablets, vinegar, and moth balls. And then some
that we don't lasers, superconductors, and
    buckeyballs.
  • Lander offers a well-rounded curriculum that
covers the full range of chemical interests -
    analytical, biochemistry, inorganic, organic, and
physical. Also, a five year Chemistry /
Engineering dual degree program of is available
    with Clemson University.

5
CHEMISTRY
  • At Lander, we will open your eyes to the
chemistry around you and help prepare you for a
respected, professional career as a chemist. Our
students compete successfully for entry into
    graduate and
  • professional schools.

6
CHEMISTRY
And if you are interested in teaching chemistry
at the high school level (critical need area),
you can choose a curriculum that prepares you to
enter a graduate Science Teaching Program.
7
ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE
  • The environmental science major will give a firm
foundation in the basic sciences related to
environmental studies and issues, and will also
provide you with the liberal arts education that
will enable you to relate your profession to your
    role in society.

8
ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE
  • You will also acquire the computer, mathematics,
and communications skills you will need to
process, analyze, and report environmental data.
  • This major is designed to train graduates for
    careers in environmental monitoring,
    compliance, and regulation. Emphasizing the
basic sciences, graduates are prepared for
laboratory and field positions in industry,
    consulting, and regulatory agencies.

9
PHYSICS
Physics courses are required of most physical
science majors.
10
ALLIED HEALTH PROGRAMS
  • PRE DENTISTRY
  • PRE MEDICINE
  • PRE PHARMACY

11
ACCEPTANCE RATES
  • More than 90 of those applying to medical
school in recent years have been accepted.
  • Students in Landers chemistry / engineering dual
degree program have a 100 acceptance rate at
    Clemson.

14
STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS
  • Allows students to become more involved in
    extracurricular activities and better acquainted
with the faculty and upper levels students at
    Lander.
  • The purpose of the chapters is to supply the
students with the knowledge of what science is
all about and the career opportunities present
for science majors in the real world, including
    academics, industrial and governmental careers.

15
STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS
  • The student chapters are involved in many areas
in and around the Lander campus.
  • The chapters have three major areas that are
concentrated on during the academic year service
to Lander University and the surrounding
    Greenwood community, professional development of
the students, and social and recreational
    activities.
