Title: The Koala We are wondering what makes the koala unique

1
The KoalaWe are wondering what makes the koala
unique?
By Whitney and Dana 2003
2
Where can we find this unusual animal?
The koala lives in the Australian eucalyptus
forest. Most of the eucalyptus forest habitat is
in eastern Australia, in Queens land. It stays up
in this special habitat of trees where it sleeps
and eats.

What does the koala look like?
A Koala looks like a baby bear. The Koala has
strange front feet because two fingers are on the
palm and on the feet two toes are stuck together.
These funny hands help it hang on to the trees,
and help the babies hang on to their mothers. It
has a light gray-brown woolly fur and in the
middle of its head there is a white spot. It has
a big belly, a round face, round furry ears, a
flattened nose and strong arms and legs. The
females are about 69cm tall and weigh about 5 kg.

What does the koala eat? What eats a koala?
The koala is a very picky eater. It will only
eat eucalyptus leaves! The eucalyptus leaves are
very oily, smooth and crunchy to chew. There is
not much food energy in this diet so they sleep a
lot. They are usually busy eating at night, and
sleep during the day. They rarely come down to
the ground, only to change trees for fresh
leaves. The dingo and the wild dogs are the
koalas predators.

How does the koala take care of its babies?
The koala is a Marsupial. A marsupial is an
animal where the female has a pouch. The pouch is
a piece of skin with a hole in it. Mating is when
female and a male create a baby. When born, the
baby has to crawl by its self into the mothers
rear-opening pouch where it stays, nurses, and
grows for about 6 months. When born the baby is
as small as a jellybean!. They have one baby at a
time. After the baby comes out of the pouch the
mother carries it on her back for another 6
months.

How does the koala communicate?
Koala mothers and babies communicate with a soft
clicking noise and also a squeaking noise.
Sometimes they make a gentle humming or murmuring
sounds to one another. They also make a gentle
grunt like a baby pig when they signal each other
to show displeasure or annoyance.

What makes the koala unique?
The koala is unique because it can only be found
in Australia. It is a very picky eater that will
only eat eucalypt leaves! It is also one of the
many unusual marsupials found in Australia. Just
because it is shaped like a bear, like the panda,
it is not a bear! That too is unusual!
