  • In 1890, Wilbur joined him.

8
Wright Cycle Company
  • In 1892, Orville and Wilbur open a bike shop and
    begin selling and repairing bikes.
  • They begin to manufacture their own bikesthe
St. Clair and Van Cleve in 1895.
  • Unlike the newspaper business, the bicycle
    business is profitable.

9
Let the Inventions Begin
  • Orville invents a machine that can multiply and
    divide in 1895
  • In 1896, Wilbur realizes that all of the flying
machines during that time lacked one thing
    control.
  • Wilbur developed a kite to test his control
system in 1899, and it worked
  • This idea would be used for the gliders.

10
Dayton, OH to Kitty Hawk, NC
  • Ready to try their inventions, the Wright
    Brothers picked the perfect spot.
  • Kitty Hawk, located on the shores of the Atlantic
Ocean, provided strong winds to launch gliders
and soft sand for cushioning their landings.
  • It took the Wright Brothers one week to get there
traveling by train, steamboat, and sailboat.
  • Journey to Kitty Hawk, NC from Dayton, OH just
    like the Wright Brothers did.

11
Disappointment at Kitty Hawk
  • During 1900 the Wright Brothers tried to fly for
the first time using the Glider they made at Kill
Devil Hill where they set up shop.
  • After about a dozen flights, they were only in
the air for about 2 minutes total.
  • Unsatisfied, in 1901, they created a larger
Glider that reached distances from 20-400 feet.

12
Experiments
  • Disappointed with the 1900 and 1901 Gliders, they
built a wind tunnel to experiment on for next
    time.
  • Comic book for wind tunnel

13
Wright Glider
  • It was not until 1902 that the Wright Glider
became the first aircraft to be successfully
    controlled in the air.

14
Wright Flyer
  • On December 17, 1903, they made the first
sustained, controlled flight in a powered
    aircraft, the Wright Flyer.
  • Despite this, it was underpowered and difficult
    to control.
  • Flew in a straight line for 12 seconds.
  • Heavier than air

First Flight, December 17, 1903. Orville is
flying the plane. Wilbur is standing at the
right.
15
Huffman Prairie
  • Worlds first test flight facility established
    here in 1904.
  • By the end of 1905, the Wright Flyer is flying
over Huffman Prairie making figure eights and
staying in the air for over a half an hour or
    until the fuel runs out.
  • This is the worlds first practical airplane
  • This site is now the Wright Patterson Air Force
    Base.

16
Patent Flying Machine
  • In 1906 the Wright Brothers get a patent for a
    flying machine.

17
Selling Planes
  • In 1908, they modified the Wright Flyer to carry
    2 passengers.
  • Doing this made the U.S. Army Signal Corps and
then French Businessmen want one of their
    aircrafts.

18
The Honor
  • The Wright Brothers are presented the
Congressional Medal for their inventions with
    airplanes in March of 1909.
  • In June of 1909, a two-day celebration is held in
    Dayton for the Wright Brothers.
  • In November of 1909,
  • Wright Company is
  • created for them to
  • manufacture airplanes
  • and to start flight schools.

19
Wilbur Dies
  • On May 30, 1912, Wilbur died after contracting
    typhoid

20
Orville on His Own
  • Orville sells Wright Company in 1916 and starts
    inventing again.
  • President Wilson appoints him to be on the first
board of National Advisory Committee for
Aeronautics (NACA)later known as National Air
    and Space Administration (NASA)in 1920.

21
Planes Brought Home
  • In 1948, the 1903 Wright Flyer is brought back to
America from Europe and is now in the Smithsonian
    Institute in Washington D.C.
  • The Flyer III is put on display at Deeds Carillon
Park in Dayton, Ohio in 1950.

discuss where Kitty Hawk, NC is in comparison to
Dayton, OH, where the Wright Brothers lived in
comparison to where Fairborn Primary School is,
and how people traveled before planes.

24
Activities continued
  • Have students work in small groups to create a
timeline of Orville and Wilbur Wrights lives.
  • Have students individually create a timeline of
    their own lives.
  • Take a field trip to the National Museum of the
    U.S. Air Force.
  • Have students work in small groups to create
flying machines using only paper. Then have
students individually write about where they
would travel if they could fly on that plane.
