Title: HYDRA Project

1
HYDRA Project
  • Use Of Semantic Technologies for Network Embedded
    System Middleware
  • WIKT 28-29 November 2006

2
Contents
  1. HYDRA Project
  2. Project Vision
  3. Project Objectives
  4. Project Challenges

3
HYDRA project
  • Networked Embedded System Middleware for
Heterogeneous Physical Devices in a Distributed
    Architecture
  • Start 1st. July 2006
  • Duration 4 Years
  • 13 Partners from 9 countries (9 companies, 3
    universities, research institute)
  • Leader C International Ltd.

4
Project vision
  • The vision of the HYDRA project is to
(eventually) create the most widely deployed
    middleware for intelligent networked embedded
systems that will allow producers to develop
    cost-effective and innovative embedded
applications for new and already existing devices.

5
Project Challenges
  1. Allow seamless access to the features of many
    devices, regardless of its manufacturer,
    technology, interfaces, location, communication
    mechanism
  2. Mobile users - ambient services and applications
should adapt to changing local and global sets of
    accesible sensors
  3. Development of a framework for secure,
    trustworthy communication among networked systems

6
Project objectives
  • Develop a middleware based on a Service-oriented
    Architecture, to which the underlying
    communication layer is transparent, and
    consisting of
  • Support for distributed as well as centralised
    architectures
  • Support for reflective properties of components
    of the middleware
  • Support for security and trust enabling
    components
  • Develop a generic semantic model-based
    architecture supporting model-driven development
    of applications

7
Project additional outcome
  • A toolkit (SDK) that will allow developers to
    develop applications on the middleware.
  • A business modelling framework for analysing the
    sustainability of the developed applications.
  • Validation of the middleware, toolkit and
business models in real end-user scenarios in
    three user domains

8
End Goals
  • Hydra should produce a set of tools that are
    easily
  • Migrated to new fields
  • Adapted to new needs
  • Hydra should produce a working system that is
  • Scalable
  • Robust
  • Secure

9
Domains
  • Real end-user scenarios in three user domains
  • Facility Management (intelligent homes)
  • Healthcare
  • Agriculture

Research areas
  • Embedded AmI
  • Wireless networks devices
  • SoA and MDA middleware
  • Trust, privacy and security

12
Embedded AmI
  • Self-configuration of sensors, cameras, etc
  • Automatic discovery of devices
  • Resource awareness
  • Context awareness - Integration of context data
    from data acquisition components
  • Make devices aware of each others and able to
    exchange data and communicate
  • Make devices understand each other and able to
    take Intelligent decisions

13
SoA and MDA middleware
  • Excecuting multiple simultaneous services
  • Automatic device categorisation
  • Apply semantic web services at the device level
  • Device Ontology
  • Device classes and descriptions
  • Device functionality
  • Security models
  • Interface descriptions
  • much more
  • Automatic construction of ontology over devices
    and their capabilities

14
Trust, privacy and security
  • Conform to professional security standards
  • Trustworthyness and trust policies
  • Authentication of users and suppliers
  • Identification
  • Virtualization
