Solar Water Heating

2
Overview
  • Cost
  • Advantages and Disadvantages
  • How it works

3
Cost of Solar Water Heating
  • Cost of Solar Water Heating
  • a single 4x8 collector can capture 1500-3000
    kWh/year
  • cost 2000 - 4000
  • do not pay monthly operating costs unlike oil
  • initial cost is expensive but save in long run
  • Solar Oil
  • Initial Cost 3,500 1,500
  • Operating Cost 0/year 700/year
  • 15-year Cost 3,500 12,000

4
Advantages of Solar Water Heating
  • Reduces the amount of fuel needed to heat water
  • Solar water heaters that consists of a
photovoltaic module can operate during a power
    outage
  • Can be used in other applications Clean
    alternative
  • Very cost-effective

5
Disadvantages of Solar Water Heating
  • Efficiency reduced by atmospheric haze/dust
  • Cool climates can damage collecting systems
  • Do not work at night or in inclement weather
  • Reflective surfaces of collectors can look
    unpleasant
  • Not cost-effective in areas with short daylight
    hours

6
How Solar Water Heating Works
  • 3 main components solar collector, heat
    exchanger/pump module, storage tank
  • Most common solar collectors are flat panel
  • One or more solar collectors mounted on roof
  • Solar collectors connected to storage tank
  • When enough sunlight, heat transfer fluid pumped
    through collector
  • Heated fluid is circulated to heat exchanger
  • Energy is transferred into water tank
  • Best performance when installed 18-50 to
    horizontal
  • Should be installed on southeast/southwest
    orientation

  • 2) Glazing
  • 3) Housing
  • 4) Insulation
  • 5) Heat Transfer Fluid Inlet
