  • Congratulations! You have been chosen from a
select group of people to design and construct
the first ever American Jazz Museum. This is a
very important task to take on, for many
Americans dont fully realize the importance Jazz
has had on American History. You will take part
in a design committee, so here we go.

3
  • For the museum your team will
  • Design a poster for the museums design. You
will also compile a CD of your favorite jazz
music to be given to the first 200 people who
    come to the museum.
  • 2. Write a timeline of Historical Events.
Starting from the 1920s to 2005.
  • Draw a map of the United States and highlight the
states where jazz made its debut.
  • 4. Interview a jazz musician to hear about their
life in jazz music. Produce a talk show so you
can let others know about these great people.

4
Job Descriptions
  • Producer Your job is to design the building that
will house all the artifacts from 1900 through
2005. Your job is also to compile the CD that
the first 200 people will get free when they
enter the. It should include different styles of
    jazz from very influential people.
  • Historian It is your responsibility to find out
what happened during the days where jazz music
was starting to burst onto the scene. What were
the people like? Was living tough at times? Was
jazz music accepted by people right away? Give
examples of 3 different peoples perspectives.
Which could include, club owners, musicians and
    common people.
  • Artist It is very important for the people who
come to view the museum to know where all the
great music came from and how it influenced they
way people lived. Decide which 4 states had the
most influence on the jazz scene and where it
began. Write why these places had such a great
    influence. Describe the differences and
similarities between jazz and other areas of
    music.
  • Journalist Go to a jazz club and interview a
musician after his/her set is complete. Here you
will discuss lifestyle, finances, and cultural
    effects of his/her career.

5
Producer
  • You will be in charge of designing what the
museum will look like to hold all the artifacts
of important historical events, as well as jazz
events in relation to that time period.
  • It is also your responsibility to compile a CD of
popular jazz music. Be creative and include
    every genre of jazz.

6
Historian
  • It is very important for the people coming
through the museum to find out what was going on
in America while jazz was starting to become
    popular.
  • Please make a timeline of events that happened in
America and jazz music from the early
    1900s-2005.

7
Artist
  • Jazz wasnt known in every state. It started in
the southern states. Please decide which states
had the most influential impact on the
development of jazz and the shape of American
    history.
  • Draw a map highlighting the states that you
choose. In different places Jazz was in
different styles. Include a description of what
the style was like at these places.
  • Choose one of your states and make up a dance
with the style of jazz music. Who would have
    danced at these events?

8
Journalist
  • Your job is to find information on the life and
times of a famous jazz musician. Produce a talk
show where you will be the interviewer and the
rest of your team members will be the famous
people. Include questions such as where they
came from? What made them famous? What ended
their career. What instrument they played. If
their were no slaves would their be jazz music?
What if their wasnt a great depression? Would
    these people be as famous?
  • Pictures, props, costumes and music examples will
keep your audience enthralled about this very
    unique individual.

9
Additional Information for each design team
member
  • We just learned about what jazz and history was
like a long time ago, but what is it like now?
  • What has Hurricane Katrina done to jazz music in
New Orleans? Choose a song from 2005 that
reflects what is going on in the world right
    now.
  • Write a Journal entry of what it would be like if
you were a slave or living in the great
depression. Would the music help you cope with
what is going on in your life?
